Blankets, duvets, quilts, comforters... it's that time of the year

Speaking of all things blankets, duvets, quilts and comforters... does everyone remember chenille bedspreads?

YES and I loved them and still do☺
I do. When I was a child, we always had chenille bedspreads. I haven't seen one in a long time.
I had a beautiful pink one when I was a kid. That was before my big sunflower 🌻 stage! 🤩
My dog sleeps on the bed with me, too. He has his own side of the bed and is good about not trying to hog the bed. The first night after I adopted him he hopped up on the bed and went over to his own side and stretched out and that's where he has slept ever since. In the winter, he has a fuzzy blankie I put over him to keep him warm. Sometimes he sleeps with his head on the pillow, just like a person. He is a very spoiled doggie, but I wouldn't have it any other way.
Awwww. I always knew you were a softy. So sweet. ♥️

What does everyone use year-round?

We, as in dear husband and I, jostle between a lightweight goose-down duvet from spring until early fall (now), and a heavy-weight goose-down duvet for the winter.

As for wrapping-up while sitting in the living room watching television, I keep a nice cozy comforter folded and stashed away behind the easy-chair, and I use it all the time once the weather dips down. Comforter works great in keeping me safe, too, whenever I stumble upon a spooky show.

As kids we had blankets and quilts which were homemade.
Admittedly I needed to look it up.. I thought a duvet was a French toilet..:ROFLMAO:

OMG,the chenille bedspread pics are going to give me nightmares!

When I was in 5th or 6th grade,I spent the night at a friend`s. It was in the afternoon, and I think her mom was still at work. Not home for sure.Anyway, friend produced a pack of cigs and said "Let`s smoke!" I had never smoked before, but think she may have. So we went in their guestroom, which had that EXACT chenille bedspread-color and all. We had just finished a roll of Necco Wafers,so used the wrapper for our "ashtray." On top of the bedspread:rolleyes:o_O. We quickly realized the paper was burning and grabbed it up-but not before it scorched the bedspread. Now you have to understand,it was the tiniest of light brown marks. I`m sure nobody would realize it was scorched-but to us it seemed like this HUGE burn hole that her mom would spot instantly, for sure. Her mom was this fiery little redhaired woman who was an absolute perfectionist. And very, very stern. But she never noticed it. I don`t think either of us slept a wink that night lol.

Oh, you guys are so lucky! LOL!

The crazy things we do when we're younger!

Love the story, Mrs. Robinson! :)

I'm so glad most of you let your dogs sleep on the bed! My mini-dachshund has to sleep down under the covers in my "lap" and if she's trying to stay up late watching TV and eating snacks with Dad, I can't get to sleep until she joins me.

Bedding is an on going problem with me. Comforters are usually too hot for the three of us, but a sheet isn't enough, so I look for really thin comforters which is what I have on now.

My mother made many beautiful quilts and I had about five of them in my linen closet. The trouble was, whenever I tried to get one out and use it, I was always unable to get the musty smell out of it. So. During last spring's wild, anti-Covid, cleaning spree I was determined to get those things clean. I washed them over and over with combinations of scalding hot water, vinegar, detergent, baking soda, and finally even bleach. I washed them again and laid them in the sun to dry for days on end. Nothing ever worked, so I finally gave them away to the homeless shelter. Then I took everything else out of the linen closets, bleached the interior, washed everything (sheets mainly) and put them back along with "sachets" of baking soda. I just don't know.

Everyone had them. Think about how neatly those rows had to be lined up when you made the bed. Nowadays I wouldn’t want that hassle. For that same reason, I won’t buy any bed covering that has straight lines.

We also had chenille house oats.

That's such a shame, and I am familiar with the odour you speak of, Della.

One thing that's worked for me and keeps all smelling clean, fresh, and heavenly, is clove oil. I bought some small terracotta plant trays which I have distributed throughout the house in closets, chests, cupboards, and dresser drawers, and on each tray I apply approx. 12 drops of clove oil every 2-3 months. Bed linens, clothing, you name it, always smells so nice now!

LOL!

Yes, lining up the rows of nubs so that they were straight, making sure the same count of nubs hangs over each side of the bed, I totally remember, Jules! :)

3 1/2 ton 15 sear heat pump on the roof, set the thermostat @ 78 set for cool when it's warm/hot out. Set @78 when it's cold. Sleep with cotton sheet year round.

Phew... 78 degrees? I'd be wringing-wet year-round. How in the world do you do it?

The only difference for me is I use flannel sheets during the winter.

I know there are only two or three other people on the planet like me, but I like a warm bedroom. I don't like tons of blankets pushing down on me. I hate being cold.

FWIW: I ordered a new memory foam mattress from Amz, it will get here on Monday. My current mattress is 44 years old, probably time for a new one, lol.

However, it's only been the past couple of years that I've noticed things in the mattress poking me. Before that it was still okay.

I suffer from that pushing down on me feeling whenever we stay at a hotel.

Absolutely loathe hotel bedding because of it!

Probably has a lot to do with age and that age loss of fat layers. That and making meals from scratch that don't include a lot of salt or fat. Have even converted recipes that call for cups of sugar to substituting pure sucralose. Kinda nice having excellent health in retirement.

We had a cold front blown in yesterday out here in the Permian Basin of West Texas....
Wet and windy down to the upper 40's...... don't laugh but after 17 years in Africa - that is dam cold for us....

Makes for good snuggling with ms gamboolgal.... as to the blanket or duvet - does not matter as long as I am tangled up with ms gamboolgal..... life is goot !

If what you ordered comes vacuum sealed in plastic be sure to have it aligned on the surface you are going to use with the top up. They can weigh a lot and are difficult to reposition once you open it.

Well I hadn't heard that twist yet. My friends have a couple of them and they let me lie on them a while back. He said they unrolled it somewhere and put it on the bed a day or so later but didn't say anything about it being heavy, and they have a king size. Mine is a full.

Another couple I know who have one never mentioned them being heavy.

So how much will an 8" "full" weigh after it's done expanding?

During the summer I use just bed sheets and during the Spring and the fall and the winter I use one of three comforters I have and one of them looks like it might be down but I don't think it is because it didn't ..cost that much.

I keep a few throws on the couch and chairs to snuggle up with doggie.

I have a memory foam mattress, totally love it.

Are you meaning the memory foam mattress........it is fairly heavy......one person has a hard time moving it.

Only the top 5 inches is memory foam, adhered to 8 inches of high density foam........you can't have a whole thickness of the mattress in memory form.......would be too soft, no support.

My mattress is very firm.

I just got my new mattress, it is still rolled up in the bag.

It says to unroll and let sit for 24-48 hours. This is going to be difficult for me, as I have nowhere else to sleep. I dug around online and it says that sleeping on it early won't really hurt it, it only might void the warranty.

I was thinking of unrolling it on my bed tomorrow morning after I get up, then it would have 16-18 hours to expand til I go to bed tomorrow night.

Any comments from the peanut gallery? -- other locations of course are also welcome. :giggle:
