Body of Lost Autistic Boy Found

.

As I have mentioned here previously, my late son was autistic.

As i was reading news articles about the lost NC autistic boy many people did not believe the father. They didn't understand how a little autistic boy could run away so fast and get lost so completely. But the exact same thing happened to me at a local park trail... so I understand how that could happen. My autistic son also ran away, got lost and ventured too close to the nearby creek. But fortunately the police found and rescued him safe and sound. Because so many in the news media couldn't understand that kind of circumstance, I called the police hot line yesterday to tell them the same thing happened to my autistic child decades ago. I advised the police to be sure to check any water features and was told they had already checked the lake. But apparently, sadly, they had not yet checked the nearby creek.

What a horror! Yes they can disappear in a flash. Had my 4 year old son with me in the mall; I looked at something on a rack for a MOMENT and he was gone! I went nuts, ran around the store crying, had everybody looking. I was blessed; security found him.

This poor little boy...may he RIP.

When my autistic son was a child, he ran away several times. Thank God that stopped when he became an adult.

Once when I was at the mall, he ran away. I searched and searched and finally found him at the opposite end of the mall at an arcade that we had never visited before.

Another time when my son was a child we were at a cafeteria-style restaurant where you pay as you leave. While I was waiting my turn to pay, my son walked out into the foyer of the restaurant. By the time I had paid, he was MIA. I walked up and down the shopping center but couldn't find him, so I called the police. Shortly afterwards, a police car drove up with my son in the back seat. His clothes were dry, but his hair was wet? The police explained that he had run over to the apartment complex next door, stripped naked and jumped into the adult pool! My son could not swim!! Thank God, others were at the pool who called the police.

I had the same thing happen with my daughter and I was an excellent mother...not that day though. She was hiding in a circular rack of hanging clothes.

Thanks for this, because, I have to admit out of my own ignorance, I was suspicious of the dad, but having read what you've written, I have a better understanding and feel foolish for my ignorance and assumption.

Thank you.

RR, a similar incident happened when my niece was 3. She loved K-Mart, and wandered off. My reaction was same as yours, but I found her in the toy aisle. I remember crying and praying as I ran around. My heart hurts just thinking about that incident.

That poor child in NC. :(

This I experienced in a mall, so, yes that I understand, I and my sister were shopping and my nephew happened to have adhd, totally hyper. When we realized he wasn't any longer in the store with us, talk about frantic. This child was my heart, so, you never saw any two people in more of a panic mode. We did find him eventually on the lower level with security, he was as happy as could be in his own world as if nothing happened.

In this instance with this child, I was just having an issue with them saying the dad was running behind the child. I couldn't fathom how the child could have out ran the dad and got completely lost, but, after coming here and thinking more reading the post, I've had time to think just how possible it could be. I shouldn't have been so quick to judge even if it was just in my thoughts, not something I had spoken out about.

My heart goes out to all involved.

My son was about 3,I was at a home improvement store, larger than a hardware store, smaller than lowes or home depot.
I bent down to grab the paint I needed and when I straightened he was gone.
I absolutely lost it,ran around screaming his name, ran up to security and pleaded for him to lock the doors, which he did...
Found him in the display bathtub,"taking a bath"
R.I.P. little man,God wanted you back for some reason.

My autistic son and I loved to routinely walk around the neighborhood. But only once when he was a child did he suddenly run away while we were walking. I quickly ran after him down the street, across a major four-lane road and back across it again. He was blessed not to have been hit by a car. When he became a teenager he began to have uncontrolable grand-mal seizures [common in autism.] Over the next 25 years, he had hundreds of seizures and had fallen in stores, in parking lots, on sidewalk, in the street, etc... but miraculously he was never injured. One morning when he was 38 years old, he had a seizure in bed and died. In the week before he suddenly and unexpectedly died, there were several strange unrelated happenings [which only made sense during his funeral] that convinced me that our deaths are predestined.

How sad; I was hoping they'd find the little guy safe and sound.

And April... the way things are nowadays, it's common to suspect the parents so don't feel badly. Many times it IS the parent, sadly.

I hope they look very closely at the dad....

I agree, IMO that is the logical starting point for an investigation of this type.

The father should welcome an investigation if for no other reason than to rule him out as a suspect.

I have a bad feeling about this case and feel that the father is the likely suspect at this time, it just doesn't sound right to me.

R.I.P. Maddox.

No one in authority has even hinted the boy met foul play yet there are onlookers mentioned in the news and here too who are already willing to join a lynch mob.

This is exactly why I called the police hot line yesterday... because of all the clueless onlookers who don't understand how autistic children act.

The father and an adult friend were walking with Maddox when the child ran ahead. The tragedy happened because the father and fiend waited a moment too long to run after him. I have seen nothing that the father is under suspicion. Virtually every parent has experienced their children disappearing from sight. One second they're there and the next they're gone.

My heart goes out to this family. The father will replay this incident in his mind for the rest of his life. His torture will be unimaginable.

So far, no one has said a word about lynching anyone.....except you.

I agree it's not about joining a lynch mob or a rush to judgment.

It's about an investigation to find out exactly what happened.

IMO it is only logical to start with the people that were with him when he disappeared.

The only information that I have are the snippets from the various news reports and they make me feel very uneasy about this being an accident.

Along my thoughts as well....I surely do hope it was an accident...that alone is tragic enough.
