Can you feel it??? In just a few short minutes, 0947 PDT, we will be enjoying the ever popular Vernal Equinox! YES, Spring is about to officially pounce upon us in all its glory. Equal parts light and dark today. Yea!!! My favorite time of year.

It's sure nice that it is light at 18:30 lately.

At an equinox the Sun is at one of two opposite points on the celestial sphere where the celestial equator (i.e. declination 0) and ecliptic intersect. These points of intersection are called equinoctial points: classically, the vernal point (RA = 00[SUP]h[/SUP] 00[SUP]m[/SUP] 00[SUP]s[/SUP] and longitude = 0º) and the autumnal point (RA = 12[SUP]h[/SUP] 00[SUP]m[/SUP] 00[SUP]s[/SUP] and longitude = 180º). By extension, the term equinox may denote an equinoctial point.
The equinoxes are the only times when the subsolar point (the place on Earth's surface where the center of the Sun is exactly overhead) is on the Equator. The subsolar point crosses the Equator moving northward at the March equinox and moving southward at the September equinox. (Since the sun's ecliptic latitude is not exactly zero it is not exactly above the equator at the moment of the equinox, but the two events usually occur less than 30 seconds apart.)
The equinoxes are the only times when the terminator is perpendicular to Earth's equator. Thus the Northern and Southern hemispheres are illuminated equally. (At the solstices, that angle reaches its minimum of 66.5°, corresponding to 90° minus Earth's axial tilt).[SUP][2][/SUP]
Another meaning of equinox is the date when day and night are the same length.[SUP][3][/SUP] The equinox is not exactly the same as the day when day and night are of equal length for two reasons. Firstly, because of the size of the sun, the top of the disk rises above the horizon (constituting 'sunrise' which is the start of 'daytime') when the center of the disk is still below the horizon. Secondly, Earth's atmosphere refracts sunlight which means that an observer can experience light (daytime) even before the first glimpse of the sun's disk has risen above the horizon. To avoid this ambiguity the term equilux is sometimes used in this sense.[SUP][4][/SUP][SUP][note 1][/SUP] Times of sunset and sunrise vary with an observer's location (longitude and latitude), so the dates when day and night are of exactly equal length likewise depend on location. For places near the equator the daytime is always longer than the night, so they would never experience an equinox by this definition.

I love it too That Guy, really feels like spring today, but ol' man winter will still be giving us visits over the next month or so. Supposed to be cold with rain/snow this weekend. But I enjoy spring very much, also autumn.

Oh, sure, be like everyone else and blame the pizza. :(

Pizza ALWAYS gets the bum rap - cat lost all of its hair? The pizza did it! Car ran out of gas? Blame the pizza! Global warming? Yep - the pizza!

People are ALWAYS rolling the poor pizzas.

I'm going to start a non-profit organization to stick up for the rights of pizzas everywhere. They've taken the blame for far too long.

You'll hear from my attorneys ...

I think I got a bum rap:( I mean, it could only have been the pizza, the Colonel Mustard was out of town, Reverend Green was performing a wedding, and Professor Plum was cleaning his chalk-board. Scarlett, Peacock and White were, well, they were glued to the senior forums:confused: So Pizza gets the rap, unless you can pin it on the Sprite:lofl:

Yes, it was that Sprite! He and Fresca were seen together earlier that night, and you KNOW what that skinny little Fresca is like - just because her name means "fresh" in Italian doesn't mean she has to act that way!

yeah, there ya go tryin to pin it on the woman behind the man again:rolleyes:

In all honesty Phil, never have tried any of that stuff. Just cigarettes.

Oh, okay. Actually I was referring to that cork they put into barrels of grog - it's called a "bung".

There's another reference for the word but being as how I am so well-behaved and socially-adjusted I won't mention it here.

Well I'm glad to hear it, turned over a new "leaf" hey:lofl:man I just crack me up!

It's okay to say "bung-hole" Denise. It is the hole in the old cannons, like on pirate ships, where they ignited the powder.
So it was my Grandfathers favorite saying. Guess he was a pirate at one time or another.

LOL, that's interesting Pappy, I have a niece that uses that term a lot, but I never knew it's origin, and neither does she I suspect:playful:

Sorry 'bout the cornfusion . . . I know a more descriptive thread title is preferred but I kinda like a little mystery... Shoulda said "Sproing", maybe. Anyway, Spring has sprung and that's a good thing.

Oh man, my new fave word, sproing!! I love saying it!! Sproing, sproing, sproing!

Onomatopoeia!

I'm still into sproing, but curiosity got to me so I "googled", my laptop started smoking, talk about overworking it to find the word, but I did!!

[h=2]on·o·mato·poe·ia[/h] noun \ˌä-nə-ˌmä-tə-ˈpē-ə, -ˌma-\ : the creation of words that imitate natural sounds
