I have begun reading Civility- George Washington’s 110 Rules for Today. Written by Steven Michael Seltzer.

Do we have civility any more?
What does civility mean to you?
Are George Washington thoughts out of date in todays society?
As I said I just started the book so not too far into it but have not heard the word civility used much any more. Have you?

I read GW's rules a few years ago after it was referenced in Amor Towels' novel, "Rules for Civility."
Good timeless advice. I wish we all lived more carefully, with more thought for others -- I know I should.

What does civility mean to you?
Being respectful of others, and nice.
Do we have civility any more?
Sure, you see a lot of it here. Of course the occasional exceptions are more memorable and fun to talk about, but they are the exceptions.
Are George Washington thoughts out of date in todays society?
Don't know, you have peaked my interest I may look into it. Fortunately a lot of George's thoughts are out of date today, like slave owning and Indian massacres. But it was a very different time.

I think that civility in modern times has become a forgotten virtue, much like common courtesy. It has been supplanted by such things as aggressive self-interest and tribalism…

I disagree. I live in NYC, wrongfully not noted for its kindness. Whenever I travel around I almost have to beat off people wanting to assist me. I've been surrounded by kindness from strangers ever since I got to be old.

All people, young, middleaged, white, black, hispanic or asian, even other old folks have shown me nothing but caring. If a bad experience happens, it will be a rarity.
