On Monday, European Union leader Ursula von der Leyen has said that the European Union is ready to offer "zero-for-zero" tariffs in trade negotiations with the United States for industrial goods.

BREAKING: EU offers ‘zero -for-zero’ tariffs to US, stands ‘ready to negotiate’

Sounds promising. I guess we'll have to wait to know what the response is. Could set the precedence for other's to follow

I would imagine that Washington might see "zero-for-zero" tariffs as unfair, as they already wrongly see the EU's domestic sales tax as a 'tariff' on US goods, even though it's also applied to the EU's own domestic goods sold within the EU. I think it might just be a ploy on the part of the EU. by watching the US reject it in front of the whole world and then the EU calling the US out on it. I would put money on the US rejecting it. The EU's offer to the US of "zero-for-zero" tariffs is hardly anything new.

Part of the US tariffs on the EU are born out of the EU's internal sales tax -- VAT. (consumption tax)

I think it sounds pretty much like the other countries who have fallen in line. Equal tariffs are fair. It's about time "Washington" got to fix the mess.

IMO, zero to zero should be the most fair for all.

Now I am no high finance expert by any means , but I do not think there is a huge difference between that, and where I do feel comfortable .

Perhaps Washington now thinks it "controls" the whole financial world and therefore maybe has become unegotiable?
It's a matter of ceasing to pay out welfare to the rest of the world through free access to the US market. We are far past WW II now and they need to stand on their own feet.

The welfare and world policing was also in part a bribe not to start yet another "global war of competing Socialisms" or fall into bed with Communists. So part of the negotiation is also for them to begin paying for their own defense, kicking in their share for U.N. and NATO operations, etc.

Removing tariffs won’t do anything to change the trade deficit or encourage renewed investment in the United States.

I think that our negotiator in chief would want some sort of a ‘kicker’ in addition to what is being offered.

It would be great if this is the beginning of negotiations that will restore some sense of normalcy.

Think it is a Billionaires Bulling bluff that's backfiring?

I would most likely need to study each one for years to understand the total hell the taxpayers damage / job security, belief?

The Market off + $$$ 10 trillion in a few weeks all because of Seemingly Pinheaded thoughts. Most likely years of harm done too!

I'm not sure what thoughts are behind that.

Low or no tariffs would make exported goods cheaper and more competitive and this attracts investment that was held back by tariffs on those exports.
It doesn’t change the fact that our appetite for foreign imports exceeds our exports.

Our wealth is still flowing out faster than it flows in.

IMO there should still be an effort to balance our imports and exports in an effort to limit creating a dependency on other nations for our basic needs.

Just my opinion, not intended as the start of a debate.

It would be a good start if it ever materializes. True global free trade would be ideal, but few countries would likely go along with it.

these are certainly fair comments!

Won't happen. Too many U.S. products are banned in the EU, so saying no tariffs and keeping those bans won't work.
My understanding is that the EU has many other regulations that can be used to restrict trade. Often a more powerful EU country will get a regulation put into place so it can be used against a less powerful EU country. One year when I was in Europe, there was a dispute over the curvature of pickles. It seemed that some country thought the pickles from another country were not curved enough to be called a certain type of fancy pickle. Really!

I agree. Canada is probably the biggest moocher the U.S. has when it come to military spending. Canada spends about $26 Billion for their military budget compared to the U.S. spending around $820 Billion. At one time, Canada had one of the largest Navy's in the world. Today, they rely on the U.S. to give them free protection from enemies.

Check out the deficits here:
