Bright star in SW

What is it?? Venus?? Sure is pretty, anyway.

Sunset, Warrigal.....Yup, Phil, guess it's Venus. Seems brighter than ever lately. Was thinking of that comet we're supposed to be seeing soon; ISON, or something??

Seems we used to call Venus the Christmas star, but if Jesus was born in Spring, then.....ah well, that's all debatable, I guess. :highly_amused:

I thought Venus was referred to as either the "Evening Star" or "Morning Star" (even though of course it isn't a star at all).

I should think the Christmas Star should be Polaris, the "North Star". North Star ... Pole Star ... used as a guidance system, perhaps even for the Wise Men ...

You'll have to forgive me, though - it's been 40+ years since I hung out in planetariums, so I'm not sure. :playful:

It is Venus. It goes through phases similarly to the Moon, so at times it seems a little brighter. Hope we will be able to see the comet.

If it is the brightest and largest object (except the moon of course) in the sky and close to the horizon it has to be Venus.

Yes Mars has a red tint to it but is is not as bright as Venus. Also planets do not twinkle like stars. If they appear to twinkle it is the Earth's atmosphere effect it. The Earth's atmosphere can also make something in the sky look red when it is not.

Yup, guess it is Venus, the evening "star". Seems extra-bright lately I noticed. TWH, I know just what you mean; even as a child, I used to star-gaze...my Dad taught me about the stars & constellations; and I used to feel better realizing what a huge universe it must be, and how small my problems seemed in comparison. Never hurts to reflect on that, even now.
