British couple win biggest ever lotto Millions...

Joe and Jess Thwaite, a couple from Gloucestershire in their 40s, won £184 million jackpot from a lucky dip ticket on Tuesday.

I'm very happy for them.. they're in their 40's.. and have 4 children between them....

In the UK we don't pay taxes on Winnings or prizes...


WE all know what we'd do if we won a huge amount on the lottery.. even those of us who don't even do it... but in reality do you think the lottery should have lower prizes, with more winners. ?.. Equal shares for more people ?

I would be delighted with 5 million... .. but even if they topped prizes at £10 million.. from the above win that would have meant 18 people would be multi millionaires today

Whaddya think ?... and what would be your very first purchase if you won a huge sum on the lottery ?
 

I remember some study about winning the lottery doesn't necessarily make you happier. I can understand how quickly life would change if you bought a lot of stuff fast. Quick and big change will always raise our stress level. I looked on the web and found this short informative video about... (I have never played the lottery, i don't want to be wealthy.)

No idea what I'd buy if I won a big lottery - not that I play the lottery more than once or twice a year...

I'd share enough with my kids to give them financial security but not so much that it would screw up their lives. Then I'd spread the rest around to friends, family and charities. Probably buy a large vacation house at the beach for the whole family to enjoy. Otherwise, my life wouldn't change much.

Too much money destroys people more than too little.

This is one of the reasons I feel that huge amounts like this should be broken up into smaller parcels.. 5 or 10 million.. enough to change most people's lives.. but not enough to destroy their life

This couple have said today that they were already very comfortably off.. so it's a pity that more people couldn't have had a share in that who would probably be more needy.. those who stand in queue at the lottery desk every week.. spending money they really can ill afford on lottery tickets hoping their lives will change for the better

Personally to me that's madness, I don't do the lottery at all... I'd rather have the money in my purse than make the lottery people..or in this case these already financially stable people better off..

The family would get some. Not enough for them to be stupid with. I won’t analyze my plan to much as I’m not expecting to have an opportunity to put it into action.

The original question was about smaller jackpots. That’s what they should do but logically they let them grow because they know that a lot more will be spent, even by those who don’t normally purchase.

..but don't you think many more people would buy tickets if the jackpot was smaller ( broken up into smaller amounts).. and therefore more people have a chance to win?. Currently the odds of winning the lottery are something like the same odds as me being struck by a truck while standing on the face of the moon... so if they reduced those odds.. I'm sure many more people would play..

We have two major Million dollar lotteries every weekend & on a Wednesday. They sell very, very well. As they build and the jackpot skyrockets, many many more people buy. I think we have a limit of $60 or $70 million. More than any one family needs. If the winning by a group of 10 - 20, then it’s just a very nice win.
 
Holly,do you know how much money that would be in U.S. dollars?
I'm happy for them,I've never bought a lottery ticket. If I did and won I would give most of it to charity, the rest to my family,some for myself Sue
 
I don't think it should be allowed to accumulate to that sort of amount. I think 2 Million is quite enough. If it isn't won, it should go to charities.

Lotteries here are run by the government. 50-60% goes to the winners. Large proportions are given to charities, local events, etc. There are no taxes paid by the winners.
