Broccoli I started from a stem

There was this HUGE piece of broccoli. After I cut the florets off, it seemed too large a chunk to just throw out. Always experimenting with things, I stuck the stump in water to see what would happen. In a week, it had sprouted roots, so I put it in a pot. Now it's getting leaves.

WoW...I never gave it a thought to grow Broccoli at home.

I just googled it and it said that only one plant per 5 gallon pot because it spreads so big... I'll be interested to see how yours turns out ..

So cool! 5 gallon plastic buckets don't cost a lot... just drill holes in the bottom and stick it in a sunny corner outside somewhere. Water.

BTW, broccoli stems are good to eat. Just peel w/ a veg peeler and slice thinly.

Works great in stews and soups. Hard to imagine people are throwing these away. How thick are your tossed out potato peels?

I don't even peel them, just scrub with a brush under running water. (waxy or new potatoes)

If occasional russets, I bake them in their skins. I eat their skins, too.

Yeah, it's a very thrifty and productive way to grow a garden

Last year we experimented with tomato seeds from the tomatos we bought at the grocers, since the starts became so expensive in the nurseries
Very productive
This year most of our garden will be from seeds

We didn't pull last year's kale plants after they went to seed

Now they're growing like crazy

They're my favorite part of broccoli. I don't bother peeling them.

Wasn't really our idea
It just happened
Then we studied up on it

Later in the summer. it still cooks up til tender
But not as savory
Frozen kale gets us a great soup stock in winter
