For the last few weeks Firefox has been nagging me to sign into my Google Account on many websites. I have not been able to resolve this even though I turned off 3rd party signon in my Google account. Very frustrating.

Then this morning I came across bad news about DuckDuckgo:

So good bye Firefox & DuckDuckgo, hello Brave. This browser is based on chrome except all the tracking code has been removed. It touts a built-in Adblocker & search engine. The builtin search engine is OK but you can use any search engine. The recommended one is Startpage. I haven’t yet decided which one to go with so I’m trying them both out.

My tracking test is when I start seeing adds on my phone related to computer searches I know I’m being tracked.
 

Brave..review...

According to its website, Brave is 3x faster than Chrome (opens in new tab) (view their speed test here (opens in new tab)), and it has better default privacy features than Firefox (opens in new tab).

Personally, I didn’t find Brave to move faster than Chrome or Safari. In fact, Brave seemed to very slightly lag behind the other two browsers when searching for the same phrase. It wasn’t slow enough to be very noticeable, but it definitely didn’t seem to be considerably faster, either.

It’s also unclear how Brave is so much more secure than Firefox. It seems that they have many of the same default privacy offerings, but Firefox comes out ahead with features like Primary Password and instant-erasure of online info when the browser’s closed. That’s not to say Brave isn’t safe, but safer than Firefox? Potentially not.

There seems to be a special version that people buy for crypto currencies usages. Some of the reviews are in reference to that version and not the free version at the brave website. Your link lists it available at Amazon for $14.99 so I'm not sure what they are reviewing.

I think the speed thing is best tested on your hardware. I can't really tell any difference between Edge, Firefox, Chrome or Brave on mine.

I'm just frustrated with Firefox asking me to sign-in with Google and no option to turn it off.
 

I get that "sign in using your Google account", quite often,
I don't let it bother me enough to look for another browser,
I just "X" it off the screen and carry on, if I have an account
and get the same, sign in with Google, I "X" it and sign in
properly.

Don't worry about it 1955.

The best I can figure is that some websites implement this so called feature but it's really all about tracking you better. So I'm frustrated that Firefox facilitates these websites and there's no way to turn it off. It's not really a pop-up but rather embedded into webpage. Other browsers don't do this & in my book it make me wonder what else Firefox is doing.

Right now I have Edge, Firefox and Brave installed. You can't really get rid of Edge but after using Brave I'm starting to like it much better & I'll probably dump Firefox.

I get that all the time, I didn't notice that it was a Firefox thing or...
I just ignore that and log on to the website as I normally would. I don't like the idea of logging in with my Google account, Facebook account or any other account, I prefer not to cross-pollinate my browser cookies and have everybody knowing all my browser history and... :rolleyes:

I read that wired article about DuckDuckgo recently. I used to care about being tracked and have my browsing data harvested, but realistically, there's no 100% solution other than just staying off the internet completely, and going back to the 90s.

That’s exactly true. Most of these browsers have ways of getting into our information no matter what security we have installed. They are always one step ahead of us.
 
After using Brave for a day now I’m pretty happy. It is definitely faster & has better privacy policies in my opinion. You can actually turn off 3rd party sign-in whereas Firefox does not give you that option.

No more nag screens.
I haven’t given up on trying to protect my privacy yet so I’m always looking for better options.
After reading more reviews it was interesting to find out it was developed by one of the founders of Firefox.

Oh no! Not DuckDuckGo! 😩I thought I could trust them.

Yes, I have been using Brave for about 4 months now. It is the fastest and blocks most all adds. ..without many sites knowing it is doing so... ( like with Firefox's Adblock ). I am not into the crpto currency thing they have going, but the idea is great. I did have one site yesterday tell me I needed to turn off Adblock so I couldn't access that page. But that is very unusual. I am going to keep using it. I will not use Edge, or Chrome or opt into signing up for anything Google, or Microsoft. They follow you
everywhere! :) I do use google as a search engine. I am amused that it answers questions at the top of their page, no matter if it is "truth" or not. I treat it like asking HAL2000 in "Space Odyssey".

Oh blocking the ads without websites knowing is enough to make me try Brave now! 😀(y)

I left duckduckgo with their crappy ad filled page months back for Startpage. Startpage has some junk on theirs, too, but it's at the bottom were it ain't in sight unless I scroll down. I've been pleased with Startpage.
 
Not related to MATE, but a few people have recommended Brave browser. But recently I read that its riddled with spyware and that they track absolutely everything. I have recently uninstalled it as I don't want anyone collecting info from me. I am trying to switch from Chrome fore same reason - at least I assume cuz its the Google-Monster and all.. If the Brave issues are actually true, what browser would you recommend? I have Opera, Chromium, Brave, Chrome, Vivaldi and Firefox installed. I want to reduce that number to no more than 2. Over the years I've had to install other browsers for various reasons, just want to clean up the list and stick with one main browser and a second for backup.

I use Brave browser on a daily basis, I also use dnscrypt-proxy so I have a constant/reatime log of all dns queries made.

Brave is probably one of the browsers that connects to the least number of sites in comparison to other browsers.
I also checked the URLs and IP addresses that Brave connects to when it is started and when I'm surfing but I encountered no possible shady entities whatsoever.

Also I discovered that it blocks trackers and other filth pretty good.

In my opinion it is privacy-wise a good notch above firefox.

I do not share the opinion that Brave is riddled with spyware an trackers, on the contrary. But if you want some peace of mind, try to verify the claims that the people around you make, to a reputable source or just google their claims.

b.t.w. if you want an ungoogled firefox, stripped from all telemetry, phoning home and other anti-privacy stuff, you could try 'Librewolf' (it is a normal .deb, no snap)

Still love N' Brave. Works great syncing with all my other instances.

I don't find that Brave is faster than Chrome. I've also found that I can't access certain websites using the Brave New Private window. Brave used to crash quite a bit too but not as much now. It's annoying that I wasn't able to set Brave up so things I bookmarked on my tablet could also be viewed on my computer, like I do with Chrome. I tried three times while following their instructions and it didn't work. So I often find myself opening up articles I want to bookmark in Chrome so I can bookmark them for future reference.
 
times are getting tough and money tighter...someone has to pay the bill for all that company server time and you the consumer are going to do it be getting a sh*t load of ads. companies are struggling to pay their "want more workers". and dont forget that 10billion dollar bonus to the ex ceo...
 
It's just one person's opinion of which is the best browser/search engine, therefore I selected Opera/duckduckgo as my personal choices.
