I broke down about an hour ago and turned the furnace on for the first time this fall......the inside temp was 69 deg. which is just a tad brisk, especially when stepping out of the shower.

We've had no sun for two days and a cold front with a northerly wind came rolling in yesterday noon and our wind chills have been in the mid 40's all day with rain moving in later this evening and tomorrow.

I'm glad to see the mid and high 90's of summer gone but gawd I hate to see the cold blustery days of winter arrive.......anyone else had to use their furnace yet ?

Same here Ike. Had turn on the furnace to take the chill off in the morning.

Then, later on, I almost had to turn on the a/c because it got so hot with the sunshine.

Such is life in Southern California. (sigh)

I keep my thermostats set between 65-68 degrees, mine did kick on a couple times. It's the dampness that gets to me so every once in a while I will turn it up for a bit. It's unusual at this time, but our trees haven't started turning and no frost yet. It will be here soon!

We've never ran our furnace this early. Usually not until sometime in November. We had 2 hard frosts during the night of the 9th and 10th this month. Dipped into the 20's and didn't get higher than 50 during the day. I wonder if we'll see snow by Halloween. Trees are already showing their Fall colors and leaves falling like crazy.

We haven't had any really cold weather yet in Jersey but even if we did I wouldn't want to turn the heat on. If I were living here myself I'd never turn it on. I'm 71 and still feel like a human furnace. The hubby is another story. He's all balled up in his recliner and looking miserable. I tell him to go put a sweater on and get an afghan. I think it's easier to warm up than it is to cool off.

I'm not turning on heat until it gets in the 30's! We have had some mornings in the upper 40's and I love it! It has been so hot here this summer, I love not hearing the A/C running!

We have here in Colorado, yesterday I wore my light winter jacket for the first time on our walk with the dog in the park. 50 degrees, overcast and drizzly. Today is 70s and sunny, short sleeves again. I set the thermostat at 64 for the night, but it hasn't started coming on itself yet. In the morning we put it around 73 to take off the chill till we wake up and have our coffee, then it gets turned down for the rest of the day.

Heat? I'm in Scotland. The heating is always set and will sometimes come on in summer. Fleece jackets or sweatjackets are never put away.

No furnace yet for me either. I have an electric heating pad to take the chill off the bed so it will be toasty.

I kept the furnace on last night and the house this morning is a comfortable 72 deg.......we normally keep the thermostat set on 72 deg. in the winter and 76 deg. in the summer.

" and turned the furnace on for the first time this fall.."

Don't you have thermostats in the States?

They're natty little devices that turn the heat on when it gets cold, and off when it gets warm!

Yes thermostats have finally found their way to the U.S.

Mine has a 'cold' and 'heat' switch, with programmable temp settings for each, but I've got to flip it to one or the other depending on which is needed......I'm sure there are probably more advanced models on the market but my particular thermostat is not smart enough to figure out what season it is so it must be done manually.

We have had the furnace on a few times.. Just got it cleaned and serviced and a part replaced in anticipation of a Chicago winter. By the way... they really gouge you on the parts and labor.. but better done now than on January 1st at 25 below.

Here you almost have to turn the furnace on once early just to find out if it works. If you wait 'til the first cold snap, and find it doesn't work, you end up on a waiting list a mile long because everyone in town with a broken furnace calls a repairman the same day.

I've only been to Chicago once, and it was during xmas holidays around 2001 or 2002. OMG! The bitter wind had us running from the car to the museums or hotel.

lol! Yes.. we have caught up with the technology, but we must flip back and forth between heating and cooling as most of us have central air condioning. The furnace will not switch on unless the thermostat is on Heating.
