I'm starting this thread because I live in Buffalo, NY the epicenter of the Xmas Blizzard '22 how it started ,latest updates. This storm is different from the '77 Blizzard,in that one it had snowed the day before then the winds just took over
Fri,12/23 out for my early morning walk at 6am temp was 41, lightly raining no breeze, dusting of snow on ground. At 8:15, the winds started to really pickup around 35mph started snowing, winds just went higher it didn't let up for 2 days. The driving ban in city went into effect at 9:30am. The winds were whipping over 70mph at times it was quite terrifying ,because I thought as did other residents our windows would blow out. We lost power/heat Fri afternoon for 4hrs, phone/internet/TV,that was restored on Sun morning around 10:30a. Sadly we have lost 28 residents,3 died on Sat, 2 due to medical issues, ambulances/firetrucks couldn't get to them because of poor visiblity/drifting snow. The 3rd person was found in a snow drift, others were found in their cars or homes
I went outside Sun morning{all bundle up} just to see for myself what the winds/snow had done.My street which is throughfare a plow came by ,really couldn't drive down the street,it looked like we got 2 feet of snow All of Erie County&others were under state of emergency
The Buffalo airport which is located in Cheektowaga,NY{burb of the city} 20 min south from here got 43 inches of snow has been closed since Fri morning, may open tomorrow at 11am. The total has been update to 55 inches,we now have surpassed our avg amt of snow for winter at 100 inches{ this amt includes the Nov storm} The latest, a ban in the city is still in effect, local grocery stores will reopen at 10am,National Grid is getting help from outside sources to restore power to about 1,000 homes still without power/ heat
There is a light at the end of the tunnel, starting tomorrow temps will rise to mid 30's by Fri in mid 50's
If you want me to continue give you updates I will do so,thanks for concerns Sue

I have a friend, who lives in Erie, PA, just down the road from Buffalo. The lake effect dropped feet of snow all through winter. In your area, kids are born with a snow shovel in their hand. My friend sent me pics of the 8 foot high snow drifts, and "snow tunnels" to his garage. So, if you get wiped out, more than usual, it has to be really bad. Take care.

Sue... I'm pleased to hear that you're ok..but really sorry to hear the report on the car radio this evening as I was driving home that said there's been 60 deaths, mostly from people stuck in their cars in the snow for up to 2 days, and yet more expected to be found.. that's tragic. The American correspondent in Buffalo said that you're expecting the last blast of snow tonight of up to 9 inches on top of what is already there.... terrifying,

R.I.P to those who lost tgeir lives, and stay as safe as you can Sue... keep us updated if you will, please

Please keep updating us, Sue.

Have any of the deaths been attributed to shovelling snow. You have the heavy, wet stuff, there. aka heart attack snow. With so many snow blowers now, it won’t be the same as many years ago.

Holly, the death toll hasn't changed, its at 28, not 60.It really bothers me when national media bring in reporters who are not from here, they get their info wrong. We got some light snow today,a couple of inches it was nothing. The snow band is headed south where the ski areas are located, the ski operators are thrilled with all the snow, they can have it

The 60 deaths is the national total of all 2022 blizzards. 👍

Buffalo's nickname is 'city of good neighbors' I've heard many wonderful stories during this time of crisis of neighbors helping neighbors or allowing strangers who got stuck in snow to come into their homes have a meal/get warm Then you have others who decide they are bored only thinking of themselves decide to go loot local businesses. The police have arrested 5 people so far
An update Buffalo still has travel ban, all other areas now have 'travel adversary' in place
It wasn't bad today, temps were near 30 which felt like a 'heat wave' compared to the single digits we had over the weekend

Glad you’re doing OK.
About a hundred years ago, we lived in St. Louis. Dave was coming back from a business trip to Brazil, where It was summer. I’m thinking it was 1978? I was driving to the airport to get him, when it started to sleet. By the time we were home, it was snowing. And snowing. It was, as I recall, a weekend. Lots of folks got stranded because they were out for the evening and couldnt get home. When we woke up in the morning we were buried in snow. Dave had gone to the beach in Brazil, where it was summer, and was now faced with the prospect of shoveling snow with a sunburn! He was upset because “How am I going to get to the office?!?” I told him to get real. No one was going to get to the office that day or even the next. Of course, back then, Zoom meetings were the stuff of science fiction. Snow plows didn’t make it to our street for two days. I am so glad we live where snow is a rarity, and when it does snow, we don’t have to worry any more about driving in it.

Edited to add: I did some digging on the internet. I think it was actually 1982. Here’s a link.

One news reporter actually explained why people were out in the "storm of the century." She said that many people just didn't expect it to get that bad. The winters in Buffalo are always brutal, and people there believed they could drive in it since they had driven in blizzards before and made it through. Other were workers who were going home after getting off work, such as from Walmart. They had no choice.

I'm getting my info from local well respected AM radio station, digital edition of our local paper,Buffalo News There has been no paper delivery since Fri. I can't use TV my new cablebx coming Fri
This is latest:
death toll is now at 33{ 4 from suburbs either shovelling or medical problem} one of the victims in city was 22yr old nursing student trying to get to work. Buffalo has 800 miles of streets the cleanup is going to take awhile using front loaders/plows The police are now towing away abandoned cars to 4 different places around the city, The airport is opening up at 11am,doubt many planes can leave or arrive. The 2 local grocery stores Wegmans,Tops opened at 7am , Tops warehouse in Lancaster{suburb} is open getting items to the stores
Mayor Bryon Brown told residents last wk thru social media/interviews to take this storm very seriously ,some heeded his advise got items on Thurs to 'hunker down' for couple of days, others didn't .My apt building is on W.Ferry St, halfway between the 2 main streets in city Elmwood&Delaware Aves This morning at 6:30 I walk down{wearing yellow reflector vest} towards Elmwood{ my usual walking route} to see for myself.I saw snow piled halfway up on street lights, was plowed pretty good as is mine. I'm sure Delaware is as well
There is a good sign,no snow in the forecast for next week or so,temps will be way above normal in the 40's{ starting today} 50 by Sat, will certainly help melt the snow.As I look out my window, the sun is shining for the 1st time in days, boosted my spirits
It saddens me we've lost so these residents, I keep their families&loved ones in my prayers

They've been starting off the local TV news the past few days with a 10 minute segment on this. I live in eastern New York, but we didn't get that catastrophe! I feel for the people affected, especially the older folks that can't get out to clear it. They said on the news that people must get out and clear public and private sidewalks so mail carriers can get through. How can you shovel when it looks like this?

Houses along Lake Erie are still covered in snow and there are concerns rapid melt could cause flooding

Motorists have been slammed for failing to heed travel warnings about the 'blizzard of the century' that swept across the United States and especially devastated Buffalo, leaving at least 31 dead in the western New York region.

The storm has killed at least 65 people across the country and the aftermath in Buffalo has been likened to a war zone, with struggling emergency crews expecting the death toll to rise further.

About 30 people were forced to spend their Christmas inside a Target store in Cheektowaga, Buffalo, after the blizzard tore through the region 'hard and fast'.

Nathan Marton, the city's public works commissioner, urged people to 'stay patient, and stay off the roads', adding: 'We still are finding a lot of people out and about just hampering our efforts as first responders.'

The storm hit over Christmas weekend and, while the worst of the snowfall has now passed, ice melt and incoming rain has authorities on edge with increased risk of flash flooding.
