Bullying is not the exclusive domain of the young.

SAN FRANCISCO -- The unwanted were turned away from cafeteria tables. Fistfights broke out at karaoke. Dances became breeding grounds for gossip and cruelty.

It became clear this place had a bullying problem on its hands. What many found surprising was that the perpetrators and victims alike were all senior citizens.

Nursing homes, senior centres and housing complexes for the elderly have introduced programs, training and policies aimed at curbing spates of bullying, an issue once thought the exclusive domain of the young.

"There's the clique system just like everywhere else," said Betsy Gran, who until recently was assistant director at San Francisco's 30th Street Senior Center. "It's like 'Mean Girls,' but everyone is 80."

After the cafeteria exiles and karaoke brouhahas, the 30th Street Center teamed up with a local non-profit, the Institute on Aging, to develop an anti-bullying program. All staff members received 18 hours of training that included lessons on what constitutes bullying, causes of the problem and how to manage such conflicts. Seniors were then invited to similar classes, held in English and Spanish, teaching them to alert staff or intervene themselves if they witness bullying. Signs and even place mats around the centre now declare it a "Bully Free Zone."

I've seen much more bullying within the senior community than I ever saw as a youngster, that's fact.

The first time I witnessed it I couldn't believe it was happening, I naively thought that even if people had been bullies when younger they grew into mellow old people..not a bit of it. Since then I've seen it happen many times. Older people are past masters at isolating people from friends, creating drama where there wasn't any in the beginning. manipulating situations, lying, emotional bullying.. and lots more.

I'm past being surprised now, just sad .

Luck me, I haven't seen it although we live in a rental unit & have tried to get a library shelf for a simple book exchange. The lady in charge refuses us permission to either get a library shelf nor a trolley like the libraries have. She says it is not safe when little children visit their grand parents. HA!

It's worse online.

Well it's not as serious online because you don't have to participate and you can use the ignore feature. Everyone online is brave because they are anonymous. But they do kill forums eventually especially political forums without monitors. This forum is great. It's like a port in a storm.

I learned early on that you have to stand up to bullies. Gets harder as you age because you just don't have the physical presence you once had. But online bullying? Pfft. Right back atcha.

I wonder what that means, exactly. "Be best" could be taken to mean anything! And I think it's kind of funny that she has chosen anti-bullying as her cause, considering who, well, you know.

I have seen plenty of bullying from older people. The young bullies just grow into older ones. It's a trait of human nature, and probably even animal nature. Ever seen how the dogs behave in a dog park? Some of them play very nicely with each other, and others terrorize the smaller, weaker dogs.
