Doctor and I think I have it but he's done no xrays. It prevents me from sleeping on either side and it's hard for me to sleep on my back but I'm trying to. I went to Physical Therapy for it and have many exercises to do but the pain keeps returning. Last night I laid on a huge ice pack for about 20 minutes and took some ibuprofen and a muscle relaxers as it can effect the near muscles, too, I have found. It helped but slowly the pain is coming back again.

Thinking of getting the cortisone injection for it.

Anyone else have Hip Burisitis? Anything help it?

Not Hip Bursitis but I have had, and am currently dealing with shoulder bursitis now. In the mid 90's I popped my right shoulder and after two weeks of dealing with it I got a cortisone shot. In February of this year I popped my left shoulder doing some yard work and just got a cortisone shot for it two weeks ago.

The shot I got back in the 90's for my right shoulder worked amazingly well, like night and day. The shot I just got recently for my left shoulder, not so much. It has helped some but I'm still dealing with that throbbing that comes on when I try to get some sleep. Usually have to get up after 2-3 hours and put either heat or ice on it for a while. I'm doing some light exercises and I've read that it can be a slow process for healing, but it is getting better..:)

So.. I've had really good results with cortisone shots and not so good results, and these were in my shoulders not my hip. That's all I got but I wish you good luck and hope you feel better soon. :encouragement:

I was diagnosed with bursitis of the knee a few years back. The pain was not fun! :( So I sympathize with what you're dealing with, Ruthanne :(

I had the cortisone shot, and felt such wonderful relief! I also did the various other therapies my doctor suggested....ice packs to my knee, I purchased a leg cushion (a sort of triangular shaped thing) to elevate my knee (which also did wonders for my back!!) and because my work requires me to be on my feet a lot, I used the compressive knee sleeve every day, the ones that I wear when I dance (as a proactive support/measure)

The pain ultimately went away, took several weeks, and it's never came back thank god! It HURT!

Basically an adjunct of arthritis...yes I have it in both hips, & left knee being the worse. Add also right shoulder.

Another part of arthritis is spinal stenosis [narrowing of the spinal canal] , have that as well.

Not trying to be a nah-say'r but in a word NO....nothing works [caveat] speaking only for myself. The docs say only joint replacement is the answer? I choose not to at this time, for many reasons.

Trust me when I say i have tried everything, short of replacement surgeries.......the list too numerous to type in. As for meds....I use indomathicin & Tylenol...but keep in mind......they only take the edge off the pain. In no way do they stop it, but without them?.....I may well reach for my gun.

As for sleeping?..I cannot lay flat either, as such I sleep in a recliner chair, and actually sleep well, as far as that goes.

If you find anything that works?....please share. I of course will do the same.

Sorry to hear that it has affected you!..........Good Luck.

Thank you. I will post an update if I find anything that makes it disappear.

I don't know if it's bursitis or arthritis..All I know is my hips give me fits as well..

Walking, sleeping, sitting all bothers them...

I toss and turn most nights....one side to the other then on the back.

I don't need an alarm clock..I just get up when it gets unbearable.

Ruth--have you tried sleeping on your side with a pillow between your knees? Sorry I don't have anything of value to add and I hope you can find relief.

No personal experience here, but here's an old post about it that may have some helpful info. https://www.seniorforums.com/showth...me-Treatments-For-Bursitis?highlight=bursitis
Thanks for the link. Glad you don't have it.

I can't sleep on either side so I am sleeping partially on my side but mostly on my stomach as it hurts to lay fully on either side but thanks for the tip.

Sounds about how I sleep too. Sorry you have to experience that. Have you seen a doctor?

Ruthanne, I'd sure have some X-rays before I accepted that diagnosis. I had similar symptoms and it turned out that my hip joints were so arthritic that one of them was literally about to collapse.
Yes, I want to get xrays. Don't know why my doctor didn't order them. Now I have to wait till the end of Aug. to see him again...grrr.

I wish you the best regarding this Ruthanne and any others suffering. It sounds incredibly painful.
Do Epsom salt baths help any?
Does eating an anti inflammatory diet help at all?

Thank you. I tried epsom salts and didn't help any. Tried eating non fatty meat and no beef for awhile and it didn't help either. Thanks again. :)

I have trochanter joint bursitis,it's related to the hip joint, makes sense when my ortho points it out to me.
I have had numerous cortisone shots as well as some oral steroids, helps for awhile.

I have something that is a long name called a Femoracacetabular Impingement with degeneration of the right hip. The Orthopedic Surgeon was pretty quick to want to do Hip replacement surgery with just doing some manipulation in his office, but I talked him into first getting an X-Ray which determined this diagnosis and also a lot of arthritis. I opted against the surgery due to my age and am getting cortisone shots and physical therapy instead which has helped. I would definitely get an X-Ray first before you proceed with anything.

Yes, I'm going to push my doctor to xray my right hip and left. It hurts me to lay on either in bed. Last night I must have rolled over on the right one which seems a lot worse and it hurt like anything.

I don't know what your diagnosis means except for the degeneration. Are the cortisone shots helping you? I'd like to get one in each hip about now....:praying: I hope he will refer me.

Yes, I get the cortisone shot in my right hip every 6 months and it does make a considerable difference. Basically what the surgeon has told me is the Femoral head that goes into the socket of my has worn to a shape that is abnormal and because of that it had worn the an area where there is an are impingement between the socket and that femur head cause pain and arthritis within my hip. I do have to tell you though with the cortisone shot there is a lot of pressure that occurs with the shot and that is not comfortable, but it is worth it because it feels better afterwards. Physical Therapy for me once per week has helped as well. I also had difficulty sleeping on my right side. I hope you get some relief.

Thank you. Sorry you have that problem. Well, the pressure of the shot can't last that long, no? If it feels better after I'm for it. I'm tired of this pain. I have done PT, too, and do the exercises every other day now. I don't go to PT anymore but keep up with the exercise and that does help but the sleep problem persists. So, I want the shot. Dr. said he will refer me after I go through PT and I have so he should refer me. Only thing is he has tons of patients and I won't see him until late Aug. Oh well.

Oh No, the shot pressure is only when the medicine is being administered.

I had a similar thing, but the acetabulam was so far gone and also the head of the femur that the whole thing was on the verge of collapse. I had both hips replaced -- the other one was bad, too -- at the age of 67 and had an easy recovery and wonderful results. I can WALK again! I would do it again in a heartbeat. Hip replacement isn't the big deal anymore that it was in the past. I was in the hospital only two nights. I live alone and did just fine and the awful pain was gone.

If your hips get to the point that you really need to get them replaced, don't hesitate.

I am now 79 years old though and I am still able to walk just fine without any assistive devise so far. The cortisone shots have helped as have the PT. At this late stage of my life I will hold out unless I am unable to get out of bed and walk because of it. My left hip is fine.

"I was in the hospital only two nights. I live alone and did just fine and the awful pain was gone."

They let you go home alone ?! After hip replacement.

That is one reason why I have said no to the procedure so far. ........They insist on 15-20 days in a convalescent home after each joint.

Ruth--have you tried sleeping on your side with a pillow between your knees? Sorry I don't have anything of value to add and I hope you can find relief.
I had said before that sleeping on either side hurts but last night I tried the pillow between my knees while on my left side. I fell asleep and slept for over 11 hours! I must have needed it after having broken up sleep for a year or so where I did not get enough sleep. Thank you so much for that suggestion.:love_heart:

That's great the shots and PT have helped and you don't need any assisting devices.
