The Anderson (CA) police department, all 20 officers, are adopting the ancient Oriental weapon known as nunchaku in an effort to come up with non-lethal weaponry. They will require only 16 hours of training.

I spent 3 YEARS learning this weapon.

Thing is, they CAN be lethal if you don't know what you're doing.

What are your thoughts?

Very Effective!

Definitely can be easily lethal. Trouble with any/all self-defense mechanisms other than firearms, is ya gotta REALLY be quick swinging nun-chuks, a baton, blackjack, club, shovel, to beat the speed of the preferred retaliatory item: bullet. imp

Very true, Imp.

They look impressive when Bruce Lee used them in his movies, but not all of your opponents ar going to be empty-handed.

That's probably why the article said that the officers could used the nunchaku but are not required to. They have to make that judgement call.

I have a set, but never learned to use them properly. They're good to roll out muscle knots and adhesion if you have muscle tightness. :p Fine if the cops want to use them, but the billy club is likely a lot easier for them to handle. I'm impressed that you devoted so much time to learning this weapon Phil, I'm sure your use would be very effective against an attacker.

Sea, I actually used to carry them through New York City when I was learning them back in the '70's - but then, thanks to Bruce Lee pretty much everyone else was as well, usually bopping themselves in the head (I did that many times - quite painful!). I even had a custom holster made that would hold two sets of them beneath my Nehru jacket. :p

Thankfully never had occasion to use them on anyone. Yes, we learned them as weapons but also as tools for building strength, coordination and such. Especially when we used two at once and did "breaks" - where you slap the spinning stick against a part of your body in just the right way to change its direction. There was something called "The Groin Break" .... yeah, that one took a painful while to learn ...

Excellent video, BTW - thanks - it brought me back to "the day". :)

Having been to Anderson,CA many times-most recently this past July,I don`t know why this department would even need this weapon. Anderson is a very, very rural "town"-in fact there really isn`t a "town" there-at least not that I`ve ever seen....I know the city of Redding, just north of Anderson, has a terrible drug problem (meth) so I would guess that Anderson does as well. And if you are dealing with many arrests where the subjects are under the influence of meth, they can and do become very physically violent,so maybe they feel this weapon will be helpful. Could get ugly though....

I believe several larger towns and cities (LA among them?) had tried the nunchaku years ago and dumped it because of lawsuits. I'd have to do some research to be sure, but that's my dim and distant memory ...

Makes sense. I would assume the same thing will happen in Anderson....

What do I think of when I see, nunchucks, The 70's and lots of sore nuckles, thighs, mainly mine and my friends after having watched too many martial arts movies.

I also think of clackers with similar affect on the knuckles.
