As of last night, 40 million Californians have been ordered to stay home. This marks the Nation's first Statewide mandatory restriction. There are some exceptions.... essential services such as groceries, pharmacies, gas stations, farmers markets, food banks, convenience stores and delivery restaurants will remain open. So will banks, local government offices that provide services and law enforcement agencies.

Coronavirus tracking models show its spread in California could require the hospitalization of more than 19,000 people beyond the state's current capacity.

"If we change our behaviors, that inventory will come down; if we meet this moment, we can truly bend the curve to reduce the need to surge -- to have to go out to have to cobble together all those assets together," Governor Newsom said.

Officials plan to use dorm rooms at state universities to temporarily house coronavirus patients, along with hospitals that will support containment efforts.

Why are all those businesses remaining open, if no one is allowed to leave their home to go there?

I'm curious; what happens if someone violates that order? Can they actually be arrested for leaving their home? Or fined?
 
Not to sidetrack this thread,
but has anyone else noticed Gov Gavin Newsom,
in his announcement, acting and talking very much like Christopher Walken?

These businesses are considered essential services.

We are not being quarantined, merely strongly requested to remain in our homes unless we have reason to be out. There are no legal consequences for failing to abide by this order. At least not yet.

To quote Bill Murray from Ghostbusters, "It's more of a guideline than a rule..."

According to the governor, the person who announced this, there are no legal consequences for not following this "order." He specified that police will not be enforcing it.

California is probably the "precursor" to what the rest of the nation will be seeing in coming weeks and months. NYC will probably follow suit very soon, and more and more densely populated regions will join in. If there is any Good news about this, it may be that things like Rush Hour and Air Pollution will be reduced, as fewer people are going to work, but that will impact the oil companies and businesses....not to mention the millions of people who will be losing their paychecks.

Unless there is some "magic" solution, in the very near future, I don't see how we, and the rest of the world, can avoid going into Recession. I was reading some financial news this morning, and the list of companies that may go under if this thing lasts into the Summer is growing....most notably, there are several predictions of J.C. Penney closing down.
 
I'm not staying home. I already delivered food & supplies to some elderly friends who don't drive. And I'm committing the same crime again today (if any cops want to arrest me). Feel free to post my photo on any post office wall.
I think the Governor should stay home - so we don't have to listen to his stupidity.

I'm staying in when I don't have to go out for food and such or to help family and elder neighbors with those things. Everything is closed here anyway.
 
The governor of PA initially requested all restaurants and other non essential business to voluntarily close. A lot of them did not. Last evening, the Governor ordered them to close and stated, the Pennsylvania State Police will be making sure that they comply. Failing to comply will result in either a warning, fine or arrest.
 
There just was a guy in CA on national news saying people can leave their homes to go to the store and to the pharmacy to get their pills. People need to hear that and often.
 
People are out and about walking dogs in the neighborhood, chatting from 6-10 feet away, going to whatever stores are open including Joann's craft stores, hardware stores like Lowes, and plenty more. They're also picking up to-go foods, etc. Fewer people are working as this goes on, but it certainly isn't limited to grocers and pharmacies. At least not yet.

Not saying it's smart or right, just giving you the benefit of my personal observations.

Nobody is cheek & jowl. The trains are empty. It's been all over TV, showing stations devoid of people, even places like Grand Central & Times Square.
