Can You Afford to Eat?

I grocery shopped this week and only bought the needed items. In this trip I needed no cleaning supplies or non food items. As usual eggs were high, but regular bread was a dollar more a loaf! Salmon was $25 a pound, haddock was $30 a pound. Coffee is way up at 16 a can.

If this continues I'll be priced out of the food market. What are the rest of you seeing? I live in central New York State for comparison. It will be interesting to see prices from all over.

I would estimate that since Covid my grocery spending has doubled.

I spend more than I need to but I also refuse to buy many items that just don’t seem like a good value to me.

I still manage to buy seasonal and holiday favorites that are important to me.

I don’t buy much of anything and am thankful that I’m not supporting a young family.

I’m a northern New Jersey old timer relying on social security and a small pension so I use applicable manufactures coupons, supermarket circulars and their easy apps for discounts. I keep a lookout for the BOGO, buy one get one free coupons.

I also ONLY shop on the 5% senior citizens discount days at 4 different places; Shop Rite, Acme, Stop & Shop and Food Universe. I usually bring an elderly neighbor with me.

I usually find things on sale at Walgreens and CVS. This morning I purchased a 12 pack of Walgreens store brand toilet paper for $4.99 and a 90 sheet Arm & Hammer fabric softener for $1.99 while getting a prescription.

My neighborhood also has a Dollar Tree and a Jembro that are good for toothpaste, soap, shampoo, disinfectant wipes and dozens of other items.

A few weeks ago I bought a container of powered eggs thinking if they are good enough for our troops they must be good enough for me, and honestly they ain’t bad. I found a dozen eggs for $5.99 at Acme with the app.

Not much of an impact here. With Asian, Latin & U S Super markets competing with each other. Toss in speciality & wholesale outlets like Cosco or Sam's Club I don't think pricing is as bad as it probably is in smaller communities. Las Vegas in 2025 is 3,000,000, a 1.59% increase from 2024.

If we can't afford to eat then we must admit we are a third world country with billionaires. I wish I were younger...........this has got to stop by almost any means necessary. I'm not a coward, I'm old, shake, can barely walk, not for me a Soldier of Revolution.

Wake up.

I hit Walmart once every 10 days to 2 weeks but one thing I have every day and the prices have noticeably gone up and those are apples .I store them in fridge .

Local supermarkets here are expensive and do not find them any better then Walmart .

Unfortunately not any Asian fruit / vegetable type places which are great like I had in Albany and Knight has by him .

It is expensive all over , I speak to Europeans , Canadian tourists all time and they are ticked now some here like PeppermintPatty have land grow a lot of their food , Hollydolly lives by a farm but for most it is worse then USA .

We downloaded an App called FLIPP.
You can download all the flyers and compare them. We live in Atlantic Canada. Eggs ( large) are $3.99 a dozen @ Shopper’s Drug Mart. Robin Hood flour 10kg - $8.49
Potatoes are $2.99 for 10 pounds
Chicken is on sale $2.49 a pound
Evaporated milk is on sale for $.99 a can
We shop around for the best prices.

We use a spread sheet which helps but the biggest help is that we purchase what’s on sale and then create a menu based on those foods. We often make more than we need and either freeze it or can it to store away for another day.

Yes I’ve thought about getting chickens but I’d have them all named and our youngest dog might just kill them. He’s not very tolerate of any other animals except for his older sister. Plus there are a lot of fox where we live. I’d be up at night watching the chickens and not get any sleep.IMG_9552.jpeg

Eggs are up a buck to $10.99/dozen. Beef is stupid expensive at $8.99/lb for ground beef. They decided to play with the price of fresh fruit to see if people will pay more, I chose NOT to buy the strawberries and blueberries since the price got bumped up $2.

Paper plates and paper napkins are still affordable, but the less food I buy the less they are needed.

Yes, prices are about the same here from what I'm seeing you guys post. I have been trying to buy extra and stock up because I fear things are only going to get worse. Then I tell myself not to stock up too much because if things get too bad somebody is just going to kick in my door and take it.

Powdered eggs? "ain't bad--tasting?" Good idea. I've been hungry for eggs & can't afford to be picky. I think I'll try them powdered. :)
