Can you be defined by the music you listen to?

I may be stuck in a time warp. Most of the music I listen to originates from the 60s & 70s, some 80s, but not much. I ask myself why and how did I not grow musically in the time I grew and matured into adulthood? Living under the shadow of mental illness, my only purpose was taking pills to escape from my reality. It is easy to pray for death when death is better than living.

Psychedelic rock helped me escape from the chaos of my mind. Perhaps I trust 60s & 70s music with an unwillingness to change or replace it with something and different?

If you're comparing to the music now, I'd say we've got better taste and musicians in our time had more creativity and effort. I do have a high tolerance when it comes to listening to some questionable music today, as to say, I try to keep an open mind.

If the music I listen to defined me, I'd be an old fart who doesn't mind if somebody a quarter of my age takes control of the radio sometimes. As long as I don't hear how they want to steal my girl and tell me how rich they are and how many hard drugs they take for the umpteenth time.

Excellent question Ed. Musically, I'm kind of in a time warp too. I did manage to get into alternative rock in the '90's because there was good stuff like Nirvana, Smashing Pumpkins, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Foo Fighters, etc. For today, I don't know many artists, but I really like Billie Eilish. It is Howard Stern who keeps me up on the music of whichever day it is, and Saturday Night Live does that too. Without Howard I'd be stuck in the time warp. You could listen to him, Ed, he is hilarious and knowing, IMO and appreciates music and he interviews musicians from whatever time.

^^^ My favorites, too.

I think the attention of the mind goes to the music of a time when it was most comfortable., when you were the happiest.
I've been mocked for loving my old rock and roll music. You know what? Don't care!
Why would you even consider "changing" to "evolve" the music you love? Be YOU!
Mocked? I'd say jokes on them!
