Can you be defined by the music you listen to?

I guess I am. I listen to the 60's and 70's and some 80's. The Beatles will always top my list and many 'one hit' wonders. I rarely listen to any new music...what is there?
I'm with you. New music, ech! What is there today? Little or nothing. I take that back, not even little, just noise! Late 50's, 60's, to the mid 70's. A time of great tunes and beautiful ballads.

Golden oldies, late 50's to early 70's for me.

"Did you write the book of love, and do you have faith in God above
If the Bible tells you so?
Now do you believe in rock and roll, can music save your mortal soul
And can you teach me how to dance real slow?"

I've been watching the Prime Video series Outer Range, which uses classic rock music for the soundtrack. They played about 10 seconds of Bob Dylan's Idiot Wind at the end of the first episode, at which time I had no choice but to go to YouTube and listen to the entire song, which is just under eight minutes in length.

I couldn't imagine just sitting and listening to any of today's music — especially not for eight minutes. Occasionally, I'll just sit and listen to an entire album from the '60s or '70s. I guess there are a few from the '80s and '90s like that, too, but nothing from this millennium. So I guess in some ways I'm "defined" by classic rock music.

Here's Idiot Wind, for those interested...

I believe we become intrenched in the music of our youth. It identifies us, and enables us to feel a kinship with others of our "era". That applies to whatever "era" you are. Like Mr. Ed, I'm a child of the 60s & 70s. My SiriusXM is riveted to Channel 73- Golden Oldies. And I noticed that TV ads have a lot of 60s music. Those TV exes have never held a 45 record in their hands, but they are using the sounds of the 60s to hawk their wares, so the music has to also speak to them!!!!!!

I do not think people should be defined by any external item..
Taste in music / movies/ art ...... where the live... who they hang out with.... where they went to school etc ......... the list goes on and on

I find it silly so many seem to need to categorize people by something ... put them in a box or stereotypes ....
all while talking about diversity .....

It makes for good conversation however! ;)

I go through musical phases; for example I was afraid to listen to Black Sabbath and similar bands when I was going through my religious phase. I thought through exposure of "devil music" would affect my spiritual relationship with God.
Funny how life is and what we make of it.
Don't like death metal or thrash, too loud and can't understand the lyrics.

Country music is depressing and mournful. Bluegrass is ok but I don't listen to it.

Classical music is good but I'm not into it.

I enjoy New Wave, Blues, Blues Rock, Progressive Rock 1970s, Bob Dylan and the Band phase, Tom Petty phase, Queensrÿche phase, Country Joe & The Fish, Jeff Beck, Johnny Winter, Dr. John, Juicy Lucy, and on and on. Notice the time frame for these bands, I am most comfortable listening to the era of my glory years.

Back when I worked, the crew would warn the new person not to get stuck with me,
because I listened to music with 'Too Many Notes'!
The wife and boys would tell you that Dad listens to that 'Jazz' stuff and gets a far-away
look on any solo.

Maybe they have me pegged...

I think I am a little different because the music that stuck with me is sort of what I was exposed to as a kid and that was the Big Band, Classical type of music that my parents listened to. They would take me to these concerts as a little boy. It evolved into enjoying Musical Theatre music. This is not to say I never listened to Rock and Roll music while growing up because I did, but to this day I prefer to listen to the Musical Theatre and Classical music.
