Can you really swim?

Your problem is that you have not learned how to breath properly. So, being that you are no longer a youngster, my advice is that you swim with a swim mask and a snorkel. You will then be able to swim much longer and get a great workout.

Yes. I swim in my backyard pool for half an hour nearly every day during summer. I alternate between crawl, dog paddle and sidestroke, mostly sidestroke. That's swim time, meaning 30 minutes without floating, touching the bottom or grabbing the side.

I keep an eye on the clock near the pool to make sure I get in a full 30 minutes. We're in the pool longer than that.

Although I can swim, considering I can only huddle in a towel when I get out of the shower on a cool day, I suspect falling into the below freezing liquid-ice-cube ocean waters from the Titanic would have ended me pretty much immediately.
Agreed. I should have mentioned that I don't swim unless the pool is at between 88° - 94°. Swim early mornings when the air is cool and the water is toasty - heavenly.

Using a pool cover when we're not swimming drastically reduces evaporation and keeps it lusciously warm.

Thank you. I just never got it in my head that people float. Now, I'm lucky to be still breathing on land.

Yes, I can swim. I learned in the ocean when I was about 3 or 4. We lived in a lake region and I had a choice of 3 lakes during the warm weather to ply my various swimming strokes. Later, my father had a pool installed in our yard. We had about 3/4 of an acre, so plenty of room for a good sized pool. I swam every day for years. Kept me fit, I must say.

My dad taught me to swim when I was around 8 or 9. I used to be able to swim back then but I forgot an important part of it about putting your face in the water then turning your head to the side. I don't understand that part anymore or how long to hold my breath.

So if anyone knows and wants to share I'll gladly listen 👂

Hell yeah. I was born and raised right next to the Gulf of MEXICO. So I learned at an early age. I even went out for the swimming team in High School. Mainly because by buddy Jon Lavine talked me into it. Our school didn't have a pool but the local country club let us use theirs because it was in the winter.

But they didn't heat it for us so it was pretty cold. Jon was a pretty decent swimmer. His event was the 400 which he did in 6 minutes and something. Out of about 30 kids that went out for swimming I was the slowest. I would always finish dead last when we swam laps. Right behind the next to the slowest swimmer, this little 4 foot 11 inch 90 lbs chick Kay Arfaras. It was humiliating so I quit.

A short time after I quit the weather started to warm up and some of the more hardy country club members said that they wanted to use the pool in the afternoon and so the management tild the coach that they could only use it in the early mornings before school. Jon hung in there even when one morning it was 37 degrees and they still had practice. Eventually the weather warmed up even more and the country club kicked the team out completely. That year the swimming team lost every meet. But Jon won a few points with 3rd and 4th place finishes.

Like riding a bike, once you learn to swim you will never forget how. I have been a swimmer for as long as I can remember. My dad was a good swimmer, and he taught me early how to swim. Later I took all the lesson I could get, just so I could be in the pool. But, I can swim most strokes fairly well, except for the 'Butterfly'. I can do it, but it is not pretty, and I get tired fairly fast if I do it. I love to do the breaststroke and can do it forever, but the freestyle works well also, but I cannot swim as long, as I can with the breaststroke...

I also passed the Senior Life Saving test when I was fairly young. I worked as a lifeguard during my high school years in the summer.
