Cancelling My Travel Plans

I was hoping to visit my out-of-state grand kids, this summer, but was just diagnosed with Lactose Intolerance as a result of my Celiac Disease, but my doctor suggests I cancel those travel plans, because my digestive system hasn't completely healed & the stress of travel could bring on severe, digestive flare-ups. I hate to disappoint the kids again, because I wasn't able to visit them last year. And some friends have told me, visiting the kids is just what I need. But thoughts of getting sick during my visit & ending up in a hospital ER, make me hesitant to make any travel reservations.

If it were me I would get a second opinion, and not cancel, just suspend or postpone the plans There will be good travel weather way into the fall, and you could take the time to heal and learn to handle travel stresses. Being disappointed about not being able to go is stressful too.

Sorry to hear that Maplebeez, I know you must be very disappointed and your grandkids will be too. I hope your Celiac Disease can be treated well enough that you can enjoy a visit sometime in the future. Wishing you the best. An old thread that may have a bit of useful info for you about Celiac and its relationship to wheat. https://www.seniorforums.com/showth...nd-Wheat-Intolerance?highlight=celiac+disease

The kid's music, sports practices & church activities all start again in mid-August & their mom who's a teacher goes back to work then too. The nutritionist, I'm consulting with, explained she understands how upsetting it is to get this diagnosis, because you've been eating, baking & cooking with milk/butter/ice cream/ cheese/yogurt, your entire life without out any problems, until recently And now, in order to avoid GI problems & discomfort, you can't have those foods anymore. She also thinks it would be better for me to put off that trip until my digestive system is completely healed. As my dear, late, friend used to say, "This too shall pass."

I've had Celiac for years and at first couldn't tolerate dairy. After about a year I slowly reintroduced dairy into my diet and all is well. I wonder if the doctor was concerned about you eating restaurant food and getting into some hidden gluten or dairy? Eating out can be a real problem. We don't dine out much but when I do I'm extremely careful. I usually bring snacks with me to supplement my dinner if the menu doesn't have many gluten free choices. I'm wondering why you would be so stressed about traveling? I thought people love to travel. I'm not one of them but I'm never stressed when I do.

I'm no doctor but.....I'm wondering if maybe spending time with those you love , might just be good for you? Perhaps restore you emotionally?...........jmo

Maplebeez, I was diagnosed with Celiac Disease in June 2006. I traveled to from Mississippi to Cali that August and to NYC in November of that year. Did fine other than a fish taco (corn shell) at a Mexican/Polynesian fusion restaurant in San Francisco. My gut wasn't healed and the combo of spices used set my stomach on fire ...felt like literally! Other than than, all was well. So many wonderful gluten free products are now available that it shouldn't be hard at all to stay strictly gluten free. I avoided all dairy for 18 months after diagnosis and did fine without on those two trips. Let me know if I can help with product suggestions, etc.
