Canned Potatoes. Are They Edible?

They say frozen, and then canned veggies are btter for you than fresh, unless you've just picked them yourself.

I always buy frozen veggies ( Spinach aside)... all my green vegetables are frozen.. but when it comes to making soup..I use canned veggies.. so added to the fresh lentils, are canned carrots, canned peas.. canned kidney beans, canned butter beans .. all sorts of canned stuff..
 

I don't like frozen mash..or dried mash..like Smash ..Ugh!! it all has a weird taste.. but that said.. now I'm on my own I never peel potatoes.. I'd rather buy chilled ready made mashed potato..because I use so little.. . The only time I buy potatoes is when I want to make Baked potato.. and then I just buy one large one..

I keep frozen tempura battered potato fritters in the Freezer.. I cook them in the air fryer, they are very good..
Maybe it was the brand of frozen. I didn't like them but one time tried Ore Ida and they were pretty good. I did doctor them up a bit.

That is especially true of frozen; I did a little research on that a while ago.

..because I rarely eat potatoes (maybe once a fortnight) .. I use ready prepared mashed spuds, so much easier to keep in the fridge and cook in 3 minutes .. with some black pepper and butter they're not too far removed from the real thing..

It's so funny how a thread on here will be so timely: last week, I decided to buy some canned potatoes after not buying any for years. I bought a can and put it in the pantry. Huzz had stopped by the store and bought a small container of mashed potatoes (small because I hate mashed potatoes :ROFLMAO: ) and when he pulled it out of the fridge to heat up, discovered he had bought pizza dough by mistake! :ROFLMAO: So I pulled out that can of potatoes and he liked 'em just fine. I'm gonna buy another can or 2; they're handy to have around. It's true that they don't taste exactly like or as good as the non-canned but they're nice to have just in case. (Like when someone persists in grocery shopping without his reading glasses with him! :ROFLMAO: )
 
That is especially true of frozen; I did a little research on that a while ago.
exactly right.. I have used frozen veggies for decades.. my ex m-i-l who was a cook used to make sarcastic remarks about the sprouts tasting different from fresh.. but she was happy to sit for a full Sunday afternoon shelling peas... which may or may not have lost all their vitamins since they were picked.. but she wouldn't be told...lol

Costco have them frozen.. or you can make your own.. here's the recipe for a Gluten free version if anyone's interested ( Broccoli Tots)

  • 3 cups fresh or frozen broccoli florets
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1/4 tsp onion powder
  • 1/2 cup grated cheddar cheese or grated parmesan cheese
  • 2/3 cup almond or oat flour
  • 1 tbsp Italian seasoning
  • 1/4 tsp garlic powder
  • 1/2 tsp sea salt

Instructions​

  • Preheat the oven to 400°F. Grease a large baking sheet with a little thin oil or line with parchment paper and set aside.
  • Steam broccoli for 5 minutes and then rinse with cold water tostop the cooking process. Let broccoli drain very well. You can use towels or a strainer for this.

  • Run broccoli through your food processor with your “S” bladeuntil finely chop. Alternatively, you can finely chop the cooked broccoli by hand.
  • In a large bowl, combine broccoli with remaining ingredients. Mixthroughly.
  • Using a heaping tablespoon or small cookie scoop, portion out the broccoli mixture into small balls. Gently press the balls into a tot shape. Place on your prepped baking sheet.
  • Bake for 20-25 minutes or until golden brown on top, being sure to flip the tots halfway through baking. Remove from the oven and enjoy hot with ketchup, ranch dressing, or another of your favorite dipping sauces.

I’ve seen canned potatoes in the stores…..but…..I’ve never had them…..potatoes in a can seems very s t r a n g e to me.
I very seldom eat potatoes…..summer time…..potato salad is tasty.
Each to their own.

When we were sick as kids with chicken pox or measles or mumps…….
Mom would make up whipped mashed potatoes and baby peas with real cream and butter…..wanted to be sick more just to get that. 😉😊.

..or you could buy the veggies that are not in salt...or in very low salt...

The same reason I only buy canned tuna in Spring water and not oil or Brine...
