Abraham Lincoln and Cats.

from the Ford's Theatre National Historic Site

Did you know Abraham Lincoln loved cats?

Mary Todd Lincoln once remarked that collecting cats was Lincoln’s hobby. We have no way of knowing how many cats Lincoln had over the years, but he did have at least two while in the White House. In August of 1861, Secretary of State William Seward (@SewardMuseum) gave Lincoln two kittens which he named Tabby and Dixie.

During one visit to the White House, Seward’s daughter Fanny witnessed the kittens playing with Lincoln and she wrote in her diary, “Mr L. seems quite fond of them. Says they climb all over him” According to one story, he even let them eat at the dining room table much to Mary’s frustration.

When Mary told him to stop feeding the kitten from the table, Lincoln responded, “If the gold fork was good enough for former President James Buchanan, I think it is good enough for Tabby.”

Cat Blog #1 of 2 - English Language Lessons

+++++++++++

Taking cat through her daily English Language Lesson.

Have to say, not going as well as I might have hoped.

Beginning to wonder if Cat will ever be fluent.

Cat: “Hey Monkey Lips! Go Jump in a Lake!”

Hooman: “Oh, that’s just lovely, cursing me with that mouth of yours. You can learn curses just dandy, but nothing else, eh?”

Cat: “I find you droll, boring, hackneyed and trite, dated, worthless,... a loser.”

Hooman: “I think I am going to cry..”

Cat: “Oh, is da iddle hooman going to cry now? Oh, so sad…”

Cat Blog #2 of 2 - Successfully Lying to Your Cat

Cat, enjoying lying in a sunbeam.

Hooman: “Daddy make nice sunbeam for you! Daddy make the sun and the sun makes the nice sunbeam for the baby…”

Cat: “Oh, so now you are orchestrating the creation of celestial bodies, worlds and suns and solar systems? I watch the Discovery Channel baby, who do you think you are fooling? By the way, Monkey Lips, you're ugly and smell funny.”

Hooman: “I think I am going to cry.”

Cat: “Oh, is da iddle hooman going to cry now? Oh, so sad…”
