Design is often mistaken for just "making things look pretty," but it is actually the very foundation of how we built our world. From the moment the first human shaped a flint tool to the complex blueprints of a modern home, design has been our way of bringing order to chaos. It is the bridge between a raw idea and a finished reality. Whether it is the curve of a car’s fender, the sturdy joinery of a kitchen cabinet, or the melodic structure of a song, every detail was a choice made by a designer. To design is to be human; it is how we tell the world, "I was here, and I made this better."
As we celebrate International Design Day, I am reminded that our work is never truly done. I’ve spent my life designing everything from furniture to over 2,000 songs, and I’ve found that the act of creating is the ultimate "brain health" exercise. Designing something new keeps the mind sharp, the spirit refreshed, and the curiosity alive. It forces us to solve problems and stay engaged with the world around us. I would love to hear from all of you—what have you designed in your life? Whether it was a garden, a business, a piece of clothing, or a family tradition, how has the act of designing helped keep your mind active and your days bright?
