'Doomsday prophet' Chad Daybell was given the death penalty for killing his ex-wife and co-conspirator Lori Vallow's two children in a chilling triple murder case that rattled the state of Idaho.

Daybell, 55, was stone faced as the sentence was handed Saturday as the Idaho jury unanimously agreed that no mitigating factors would make the death sentence unjust. After a brief recess, the judge returned to officially render the court's decision to end the man's life.

After a nearly two-month trial he was found guilty of killing Tammy Daybell, Joshua 'JJ' Vallow, 7, and Tylee Ryan, 16, on Thursday.

Wearing a blue shirt and tie, Daybell showed no emotion when he declined to make a statement in court after becoming the ninth person on Idaho's death row.

The judge handed down a 15 year sentence for each of the two insurance fraud counts to run concurrently with his murder sentence.

Chad Daybell is sentenced to death for brutal triple murder

I read Lori's older son, Colby's impact statement. Heartbreaking... and the jury is allowed to take those victim statements into consideration. The first thing he said was "I stand here today motherless, fatherless, sisterless and brotherless,"
Poor Guy. I heard the transcript of the call between him and his Jailhouse mother.. and she cackled and sniggered whenever he spoke about her killing his siblings.. he was screaming at her...

🤬😤 And people question whether someone can actually be soulless. I firmly believe the answer is yes. Seems that sometimes it's a lot deeper than mental illness... it's evil.

In 1986, I was on a jury for a triple murder. The "suspect" obviously was guilty, using a machete - in a fit of rage, in front of others, to end the lives of three women. He was from Haiti, and small in stature, and to the best of my recall was pretty silent through the 4 day trial.

But what I remember to this day was his eyes. A couple of times we made eye contact, and the blackness coming from his eyes was (to me) the epitome of pure evil. Yes, it was a scary experience for sure.

Because it wasn't premeditated, he was ineligible for the death penalty. We gave him two life sentences and one 60 year sentence. We were advised that "life" often just came down to 20 years, whereas "60 years" often came down to serving 30 years.

We lived in AZ when all this was unfolding. We probably got more news about details of what was happening than most of the country, especially back east here where I live now. I was surprised to learn many people here didn't even know who Daybell was and what they had done.

Unfortunately, this will be just another person that lives their life on death row and will probably die of old age, like Manson. He may not answer for his crimes here but he'll stand before his creator someday and he'll be accountable then.

During the 90's. Which was my decade of enlightenment and complete distrust of any religious dogma. I had read & researched many anti-sect documents & books commencing in my total rejection. I asked a co-worker who was a confirmed follower a question about the stance the church had taken. His answer was, I follow what my prophet has revealed and never question his revelations. That left nothing to discuss. His blinders were in place.

Netflix has a 3-part docu-series (Sins of the Mother) about it.

Dateline has done several episodes about Lori Vallow and Chad Daybell.

Their "religion" seems to be pretty much whatever they invented to suit themselves. When they first met, Lori had been teaching an exercise class spiced with her own ideas that she said she got "from scripture." What scriptures she didn't say, but they certainly weren't from the Bible.

Meanwhile Chad had been self-publishing some drivel about the end times. Lori liked his books so she drove to where he was having a book signing. He took one look at sexy Lori and told her they were married in a past life and were meant to be the King and Queen of the Final Days when they would lead everyone to something or other. Lori though that made perfect sense. They just needed to get rid of their current spouses and her kids who conveniently happened to be zombies anyway.

The reason they both truly believe all this is that they both have gigantic egos and delusions of grandeur, so it isn't a big stretch for them to think they were destined to rule the world.

Although Chad did most of the hands on killing, it's important to note that he hadn't done a thing wrong until he met Lori, while she had already done away with a few husbands. I'm against the death penalty but I do think she should be getting as much time as Chad.

I think it was Alex Cox who did most of the killings. Certainly killed Charles Vallow... I believe he killed the children, they would have trusted him ... he tried to kill Tammy Daybell when he shot at her... but of course this was all on the 'orders' of Chad Daybell who pronounced all these people as ''dark'' or ''Zombies''.. and had to be released from Lori so they both could be together.. and live on Tammy .. and the children's Insurance.

Lori was horrified when she realised after Charles died, that he'd swapped his insurance over which had been worth a Million Dollars to someone else.... so she didn't get a penny. I wonder if.. she'd got the Insurance from his policy if the children might not have been killed.. she told Daybell that each of the children's policies was worth £4k to her.. In the meantime, Daybell had increased Tammy's insurance policy shortly before she died to $400,000..

It is clear to me that Lori Vallow is mentally unhinged.. she laughed and carried on in court like she was on a day at the beach.... Daybell otoh was just power /sex & money crazy.. and he saw a way to get all that very easily...

I mentioned the now deceased psychiatrist once on here - M. Scott -Peck - remember?

Peck describes the stories of several people who came to him whom he found particularly resistant to any form of help. He came to think of them as evil and goes on to describe the characteristics of evil in psychological terms, proposing that it could become a psychiatric diagnosis.

I agree with Holly, the killing was mostly done by Alex Cox, I just meant of the two, Chad and Lori, Chad did more. I do think most of what Alex did he did to please Lori. She seemed to have a lot of power over men.

The most tragic thing is that aside from the terrible murders of innocent people... there are now children on both side.. who have no parents at all now..

Lori Vallows' son... goodness knows how much therapy that young man will need... and the Daybell children..

I watched them as well. Great synopsis! Plus, Daybell not only killed the two kids but he killed his wife as well so he could be with Lori. Yes, they are both evil, selfish egomaniacs.

These spinoff tragedies from the regular church of Later Day Saints occur unfortunately. Jon Krakauer writes a good book on some called Under the Banner of Heaven. Sam Brower writes one called Prophet's Prey.

It really ticked me off at how long they let those two traipse around before arresting them and ultimately finding the bodies of those poor children. I'm glad that monster got the death penalty. Too bad it will probably be carried out in a somewhat humane fashion.

I read "Under the Banner of Heaven," long ago and thought it was amazing, I'll look for the other one. I've noticed the spinoff thing, too. I've known so many fine Mormons, I hope I don't sound like a bigot, but the basics of the religion ask people to believe in ordinary, modern times men like Joseph Smith and Brigham Young who proclaim themselves prophets, and that can lead to a lot of David Koreshes and Chad Daybells.

I don't think they had children together ? They killed hers, and one of his. And her older son is still alive.

This highlights one of my issues with the bible, everyone seems to have their own personal interpretation of what the various scriptures mean.

In Lori Vallow's case, when she said was quoting scripture that said if you try to reason with some one a few times and they don't listen then it's okay to kill them, she wasn't quoting from the Bible, but from The Book of Mormon.

Death penalty..hah!
Years of appeal
Never happen
