Charity season

It seems this time of year we are bombarded with charity ads asking for $$

How many of you support any/some/all of them ? Years ago I looked up the salaries of a few of their CEO's . I quit donating .

I do give to Matthew 25 Ministries , due to their help after natural disasters . But no one else.

My husband I give very generously to charities of our choice.

I've given up donating to just about all of them for the same reason: their high 6 figure salaries. Maybe a bit to animal humane & to support the wonderful music programs a certain church here offers. Unwanted items in good condition to what ever drop off center I'll be passing when I have a bunch of stuff to go. & I'll spend a few $ now & then at a certain charity resale store that has really inexpensive books & some amazing deals on things I want or just appeal to me. I'm pretty careful with that, my rule for my small apt is for every non consumable thing that I bring in, sonething else has to go out.

I give money and stuff to local grassroots groups that don't have any overhead other than a card table and a folding chair.

I agree, it bothers me when even a little local soup kitchen needs a director and a nutritionist/dietician making six figures, new vehicles, a multi-million dollar kitchen, etc...

I also think that it's good to focus donations on the slow times during the year when people are not in such a generous mood, people get hungry in March and July too.

I donate to my local animal shelter. That is it.

me too, especially at Christmas when so many animals are bought as gifts then discarded like garbage a few weeks later....kennel and animal shelters are overwhelmed and work so hard ...with very little money

I also donate to the RNLI ( Royal Naval Lifeboat association) , every single one of those guys who risk their lives out in the rough seas to rescue people every day are volunteers, and are forgotten largely at Christmas while people donate to foodbanks and other charities, so I try to always remember them especially at this time of the year!!

I support the RNLI too. I have always lived near the sea and know how vital a service they provide.

I really dislike charity ads. where the say "Text xxxxxxxxx to donate ÂŁ10". NO, if I want to donate, I'll decide how much.

How sad, for you!
American Red Cross for one if the worst for salaries, administrative costs and over head,it was either after Katrina or 9/11,Bill O'Reilly had Bernadette Healey, the then director on,he ripped her a new one!
Local humane shelters here and the Salvation Army bell ringers, they were a huge help to my family when my husband lost his job..don't know if this counts but the local nursing home has an adoot a resident program for Christmas, usually take a couple of names...
I am getting tired of getting bombarded at Dollar General,Dollar Tree and assorted convenience stores for different causes.

During this season I gave to St. Jude Children's Hospital and a local homeless shelter. I also give to the Red Cross, just saw the first kettle bell ringer today outside of Safeway and gave, will give to others as I come across them for the holiday. In the past I've given to women's shelters and rape associations, the Humane Society, ASPCA, WWF, etc. I'm happy to give to any organization when I can that helps abused animals.

I like St Jude because the children & families don't pay for anything - medical care, surgery, food, lodging. Guess it's all via donations. Founded by Marlo Thomas' dad Danny.

I sponsor a child through Compassion International . . . she is nine years old and lives in Chiapas, Mexico. The money goes to the Compassion program she attends after school, which I think is a great thing to keep children safe and off the streets. I'm also able to give her a money gift twice annually (Christmas and her birthday) and can send money gifts to her parents. The children this charity supports live in extreme poverty. I decided to do this after watching the movie, Living on One Dollar in which some American young men go to Guatemala to live like the natives, on one dollar a day. Eye opening!

RGP - this is amazing . . . this morning while I was praying I got the name "Matthew 25 Ministries" and that's something that means a lot to me because of Matthew 25:31-46 where it says we should feed the hungry, give water to the thirsty, give clothes to those who need them, extend hospitality to travelers, and visit the sick and prisoners.

With all that in mind I've been planning to spend my time as a nomad (living in a van, starting next spring or summer) in finding charities to volunteer at. I had a few in mind, including Samaritan's Purse disaster relief. But since I heard "Matthew 25 Ministries" this morning while I was praying, and now you tell me there is such a ministry, I want to go to Ohio to help with their ministry efforts. Their website says they have volunteer opportunities for everybody!

I just hope that they aren't forcing their faith on the people they are helping. The unpleasant, 'you must be 'saved' or else', garbage is abusive when forced on children and the vulnerable, it spoilt my childhood.

Sorry to hear that. I think they are just packing things for disaster relief efforts. Plus they have trucks with washing machines for people to use. They took some to the homeless fire victims in California.

If they let their deeds do the talking that is fair enough.

There are too many beggars everywhere claiming that
they are collecting for some Charity, there might be
several in the town centre at the same time, all from
different Charities.

Now there are numerous adverts on the TV, (my TV
anyway), begging for support for the Snow Leopard,
the children in some African country that have to drink
dirty water etc., etc., etc.

If these are genuine Charities in desperate need of
money, how can they afford TV commercials, also
why do they get others on the streets to beg on
their behalf?

I heard several years ago that if you sign up with
a person in the Shopping Centre agreeing to pay
money to that Charity, the company doing the
canvassing get to keep the first 9 months to a
year's worth of your donations, but that could be
wrong, it seems a bit much to me.

Mike.

Charity shouldnt be seasonal. 10% of our business earnings are sent to a different charity every month. We also donate clothing, supplies, etc to shelters, both animal and human.
