The reason you do not understand why anyone not in the military needs a semiautomatic rifle is because you lack knowledge.
Here are a couple of reasons: Note 5 home invasion robbers. Not everyone is OK with being at the mercy of criminals. No other defensive weapon would do in such a situation with multiple assailants.

If I was armed and in the same place or area where this guy was committing his selfish acts, I could have stopped it in a hurry.
This guy looks like there may have been some inside family breeding going on. That can screw up anyone's mind. Guy looks like a freak of nature.

The AR-15 is becoming very popular among hunters. The military does not use the AR, but a similar version of it is used by some of the ground troops. The AR does not stand for Assault Rifle as some people believe it does.
 
In several cases these mass shooters were loners with no friends and dropouts. I had no family and few friends during high school and didn't really come out of my shell until I spent time at the Naval Academy in Annapolis. I went onto Officers Training School and then onto flight school. You learn to make friends on the way at each step. You don't get very far without have social contacts and friends when you are trying to reach your goals.

These mass murderers have no interest in much of anything. No goals, no friends and no one to encourage them to do better. Their mind becomes confused and they don't know what their purpose in life is. They have no ambition to do positive things. In the end, they hate people that have passed them by or overlooked them. They decided it's easier to hate than it is to love and instead of looking for the positive things in life, they decide they only deserve the worse that life has to offer. They haven't accomplished anything while here on earth and figure they have nothing to lose. These are things I learned in Psychology and Sociology classes. I don't think it's a one size fits all thing, but each mass murderer or serial killer has some of these traits. Someone really screwed with their minds during their growing years. I am not saying that we should pity these poor bastards, but in one way or another, they are all mentally defective.

Society needs to sort these people out before someone sells them a gun and I am all for each individual applying to buy a weapon should be mentally tested. This includes if someone wants to buy a weapon at a gun show. There are people smarter than me that can figure out a way to sort out the bad eggs, but we can't keep doing nothing. After each mass murder, we find out the shooter was in someway screwed up in the head. These are the people that need to be sorted out before they purchase a weapon.

As the people in upscale Highland Park found out, there is no such thing as a "safe area" and people need to realize that.

This shooting is yet another tragedy that shouldn't have happened. And I must point out that yet again...another White boy gets arrested and will live to stand trial. But a young, unarmed Black man who was running away from cops after a car chase was shot by 8 officers, at least 60 times! Had he killed anyone? NO! Had he shot anyone? NO! Makes me sick!! šŸ¤¬

HD...the original reports I was seeing said he shot 31 people. A doctor was on the news and said 25 people were brought into the hospital. About 4 of them were children. Most of the victims were treated and released.

Look at him.. he's such a weedy little goblin...:mad:. he obviously knew he would amount to nothing, and thought he'd make his name infamously by killing elderly people ... well I hope he enjoys his life in Jail as someones' B... itch...
 
A 78 year-old victim of the Chicago July 4 massacre was shot in the head as he sat in his wheelchair, sending blood splattering onto his horrified family.

Nicolas Toledo, 76, had not wanted to attend the parade in Highland Park, Illinois, his granddaughter also told the New York Times hours after the shooting that killed Toledo and five others.

But because of his disabilities that restricted him to a wheelchair, and his family's insistence of going, he obliged.

'We were all in shock,' his granddaughter Xochil Toledo said. 'We thought it was part of the parade. Then we realized our grandfather was hit. We saw blood and everything splattered onto us.'

Family members say Toledo was shot three times. Two other people in the family were also shot, she said, but their injuries were non life-threatening.

Toledo, a Mexican national who held duel citizenships in Mexico and the United States, had moved back to Highland Park a few months ago at the urging of his family members.

'We brought him over here so he could have a better life,' Xochil said. 'His sons wanted to take care of him and be more in his life, and then this tragedy happened.'

The shooting began less than 15 minutes after the parade started. Five adults were killed at the parade and a sixth victim died at the hospital.

Gosh that poor Man... not only didn't he want to attend the festivities, there's no way he could possibly know that his face would be on the front of every western newspaper the very next day due to being shot by a POS. It makes you want to Howl ...šŸ˜«
 
This happened in Chicago, or just on the outside of Chicago. This puts the number of deaths by homicides at over 300. In 2021, Chicago had 797 homicides according to the most recent statistics.

I think some one posted about the "right to bear arms" This is not what the constitution meant. Bearing arms are meant for the right to protect your county, your family, not as an excuse for people to go out and committ murder.

Guns are also the choice of those they haven't proven to be mentally ill yet. Most people who are mentally ill do not have guns or commit murders let alone mass murders.

Only a small percentage of the mentality ill do so, like about three percent. I just don't like the picture painted of those who happen to have a mental illness. Most aren't violent. I have researched this.
 
When I was in high school in the late 1960's, at lunch in our school lunchroom, to girls got into a fight about a boy. It escalated and one pulled a knife out of her purse. She lunged at the other girl and caught her in the throat. She promptly 'bled out' before the ambulance arrived.

Individuals who are violent can be deadly dangerous. This was true in my day, and it is true today. Today, young adults who are outcasts, bullied, etc. etc. and frequently post violence pictures or threats or both on the internet, can become killers, frequently as an act of suicide. The kids that are like this are always known within the schools and frequently by the local law officers. They frequently do weird things like killing pets or other animals for fun. People around them know they are troubled, many fear them.

If you had a way to keep them away from guns, it would not stop them. They would use a car, gas can, propane tank, etc., to do the dirty work.

We have to be more aggressive in the schools and courts in dealing with troubled youths, especially any individual that makes threats of violence. We have to deal with these potential killers...not guns! Changing gun laws is easy but will not stop the killing only change the method. Dealing with potentially violent young adults is hard in our 'politically correct' society. While we all set on our hands the carnage continues...
 
At least they finally caught him, not that that's much consolation to those who have lost loved ones.

I think the real blame goes not to the shooter, who is obviously a highly disturbed nut case, but to those who legally(!) sold him an assault rifle, and the gun worshippers who are clearly misusing and misinterpreting the Second Amendment. He should never have been able to get his hands on a gun, let alone that kind of weapon.

This weekly murder rampage will continue until sane Americans put people in Congress who will enact some really tight gun laws.

10 killed by gunfire in Chicago over Fourth of July weekend, at least 62 others are wounded​

Twelve of the wounded were shot in three attacks on the West and South sides: Four people in West Garfield Park Friday evening, five men in Parkway Gardens on the South Side early Monday, and three people in Woodlawn early Tuesday.​
