children's attitude towards you

As a child, my younger daughter wanted to marry me. At age 7 she realized that's not the thing to do. So, instead she wanted to become a doctor to take care of me when I grow old. At age 15 1/2 she hated me. At age 30 she realized that dad isn't actually as stupid as she had thought. Getting close to 40 and being married, we actually have now a great relationship. What Murrmurr said below is also true in my case, "we talk almost every day, and she never fails to say 'I love you, Dad'."

Just one example: we were camping at Scammons Lagoon in Baja California to see whales. After dark, we played cards. Under the table she, being 6 years old, gave me her best cards because she wanted daddy to win.

Daughters. Can't live with them...

...until they want to live with you.

My daughter went through this insufferable (for me) Goth-Emo phase right after Madonna said she was still a virgin, regardless, and Cyndi Lauper just wanted to have fun. Luckily for Maud, she kept her grades up at school, but life at home was unpredictable, at best. The best days were when she'd run to me crying because of some boy, or because a friend "betrayed" her somehow. The worst day was when she swallowed 1/2 a bottle of Advil.

These days all is well. Somehow, we both survived, we talk almost every day, and she never fails to say "I love you, Dad."
