Chopping down the Hadrian's Wall Tree

What bothers this person is not only has the teen been quickly released on bail, but because Great Britain has the same ridiculous non-disclosure naming laws for those under age 18 that lame psychologists pushed on Western societies as here in most US states, the perpetrator remains anonymous regardless of the gravity of whatever crime.

I suspect there is enough outrage in England that his name will find a way out into the public and once it does, his usual life is over. And that is exactly the kind of deterrent he deserves as an example to others.

The destruction of defenseless natural wonders on the planet should be dealt with harshly. Here in California, especially in Southern California, such cretins have been increasingly tagging with paint rock formations. Without serious consequences, society has little leverage over changing such rebellious delinquent behaviors.

Headlamps are used when felling trees at night so doubtful lack of light was much of an issue. They probably had it sized up in the daylight beforehand, anyway.
well they would have been spotted if they'd used strong lamps... ..and of course that tree is well known to the whole of England..if not the whole of the UK...

It must have taken a lot of effort and planning to do this. I find it extraordinary that anyone would do this, nothing makes sense. Was it some kind of dare? Only time will tell.

It is just so infuriating!

A man in his 60s has been arrested by police investigating the cutting-down of the world-famous Sycamore Gap tree in Northumberland.

The landmark, beside Hadrian's Wall, was cut down overnight on Wednesday.
Northumbria Police said the man was arrested on Friday evening and remains in custody assisting with inquiries.

A 16-year-old boy was arrested on suspicion of criminal damage on Thursday and has since been released on bail, police said.

"I hope this second arrest demonstrates just how seriously we're taking this situation, and our ongoing commitment to find those responsible and bring them to justice.

I cannot imagine a motive.
Well at least not from considerate law abiding citizens.

But of course in this increasingly overpopulated world, with increasing wealth gaps of haves versus have-nots, during a nascent telecommunications era when even the remote third world regions for the first time can see via universal television, what they are missing, some due to envy and frustration will resort to destructive revenge. And of course, rebellious youth are most likely to act so as a way to punish society they dislike since they know others will hate them for acting so.

As noted, such behavior regarding the natural world needs to be made a public example of with punishment because humans will never be able to enforce protection in the vastness of remote locations.

To a cut a tree like that took some practice and probably coaching or helping probably why the 62 year old arrested. They say cut a pie slice out of the tree which is probably why not a clean level cut. The cut has to have an angle to it so the tree drops in one hopefully predictable direction.

They could've done it at sunset or sunrise for some light. And used flashlights. Who's paying attention to an area like that in the middle of the night. The actual job would not have taken long probably under 15 minutes.

But it's the disregard for history, landmarks etc. The tree was also 300 years old. Who ever did it has no appreciation for history or nature. The teen vandal probably has somekind of authority issues and hates anything grown ups honor, talk about etc. I would be surprised if not a near by local. The parents also have issues because a teen left their house and/or may have taken a family power tool with them-if not stolen. They could've stole a chain saw and felt cutting the tree would'be just as satisfying as selling it.

This is just as bad as the ignorant fools that vandalized the Roman Coliseum this year. No appreciation and/or knowledge of history. It's all about them

The punishment for chopping down the tree will depend on the outcome of the investigation and the court proceedings. However, according to the web search results, some of the possible penalties for vandalism and criminal damage in the UK are:

If the tree had a Tree Preservation Order (TPO) or was in a Conservation Area, the offender may be fined up to £20,000, prosecuted for felling without a licence, or served a notice to replace any protected trees that have been destroyed. Serious offences may be escalated to Crown Court trial and result in an unlimited fine3.

If the damage caused by the offender was valued at less than £5,000, the offender may be fined up to £2,500 or sentenced to three months’ imprisonment4.

If the offender is a first-time offender and the case is heard in the sheriff court, the offender may face up to three months’ imprisonment or a fine. Reoffenders may face up to six months’ imprisonment and/or a fine5.
