Cocaine shark: Disturbing discovery in Brazil

Thirteen sharks were found to have ingested cocaine, but how is it getting into their systems and what could it mean for their behavior?

Sharks swimming off the cost of Brazil have something a little startling coursing through their systems: cocaine.

The drug had never previously been found in wild sharks. But that doesn’t mean these fish are unique; scientists just hadn’t previously tested any shark for coke. The effort was a slam dunk, with the 13 sharks that were examined all testing positive for the drug in their muscles and liver, according to a new study in Science of the Total Environment.

Ongoing research on environmental contamination in these apex predators suggests the notorious drug is only one of the animals’ worries.

“We detected high levels of metals and also detected ‘forever chemicals’.

I had seen this in one of my news apps and meant to post about it. Disturbing indeed. Before you know it, fish won't be safe to eat. And Lord only knows what cocaine in their systems are doing to sharks!

Don't the drug manufacturers usually make their drugs in the jungles at higher elevations in which the water run off gets in the ocean? Could be alot of smugglers a dumping product when about to be caught.

That's a lot of waste but sadly meaningless to an extremely lucrative industry who supply too many users.

Oh, that’s just great! When sharks get into cocaine, they’ll probably mutate into something like King Shark in Suicide Squad 2… 🙀

Now be extra careful of cocaine-fueled sharks boldly expanding their hunting grounds to dry land, and coming right up to your door, masquerading as different things to gain entry. Beware of the land shark! 🙀

I suppose the answer is obvious ? Where did the sharks get it ?

The obvious part being, that they likely bit into a floating bundle of the stuff ?
