College education versus commonsense

I have heard different arguments regarding having and not having a college education. Life experiences will teach us more than we will ever learn sitting in college for ‘X’ number of years. However, if a person wishes to specialize in a professional career, a college degree will probably be required.

To the best of my knowledge, the requirements to become a Pennsylvania State Trooper, include having at least an Associate Degree, or a number of credit hours. It’s just a small thing, yet it means so much.

My sister and I have Master's degrees. My brother has no formal degree but is a techie who is also very much a people person. He earns more than she or I ever have or will. He's got a very high IQ but wasn't a good fit for college. Saw no sense in sitting through classes that bored him, but will immerse himself in mastering the latest tech in his field. His go to phrase for people with degrees without good sense is "educated beyond his/her intelligence."

I thank university for polishing my capacity for critical thinking, and teaching me discipline and focus. I thank my childhood, and time on the street for polishing both my common sense and street smarts. In a pinch, the latter two contributed more to my savvy as a psychologist than three degrees.

Experience has taught me very well to not blindly take the advice of those who proclaim to have the most education; rather I weigh things out with those who have experience in certain areas with the research I do, too. I find my approach to be most beneficial in my life.

its taken me a while to fully embrace commonsense and I can be a real sucker for the intellect's point of view. I really like how some people can combine the two successfully. Like the intellect who can explain things in laymans terms. Who doesnt deliberately alienate the less academic.
