Comic Book Cover Art from Back in the Day

I'm a bit of a crime buff - I love reading about old-school crimes, whether real or imagined.

In the latter category there was no shortage of comic books covering the crime genre back in the '40's and '50's. Some of the cover art was amazing, and always gets me to thinking strange thoughts ...

This dame was obviously huffed that her guy-pal was holding an ace, so she unloaded on him with her novelty laser pointer.

Okay, now THIS is just irresponsible parenting. I mean, WHO lets some syringe-wielding, zoot-suited guy into their kid's bedroom? Mom looks like she's had a little chemical help herself, judging from the size of her waist. And what's with the kid - he's got the body of a teen but the face of a 50-year-old!

Good thing Rex Morgan, M.D. exposed this horrible crime!

Ahh, the old red-headed wildcat routine! I WILL say this, though - she looks like a hand-full. She's got her elbow in his trachea and she's holding those scissors in the perfect way for stabbing. Good thing that crime never pays!

I was reading Roy Rogers comics, of course. Lots of wonderful covers of Roy and Trigger, Mom would take me to the old Bus Depot, where we got all the newest magazines and comic books.

But then , I got older (and more adventurous), and found my Dad's old Ranch Romance magazines.
And of course, there were all of those wonderful old Pocket Books; my Dad had stacks of those in the little bookshelf.( I was sure to put them back after I read them, so he probably didn't even know I was reading them, too.)
 
I never liked that style of comic artwork for some reason although I wish I had, a schmick copy is worth a fortune now. I was more into the sci-fi art work illustrations but didn't keep any, dammit.

Didn't go in for comics but I remember having some that someone must have bought for me, can't even remember what they were except for a Phantom one. I liked the artwork in that one. Not into the 'noir' decco crime style art.
 
Not the most popular of comics, but I always enjoyed Blackhawks. Though I didn't realize it at the time, there was a lot of politics involved. A wild span of subjects...WW2, communism, etc. I remember when they went into battle they would holler Hawkaaa.......

Pappy, great covers!

TG, you notice how the later issues of MAD are a lot more adult with their subject matter as well as their artwork? I'm glad I stopped reading it in the early '70's.

Di, I wish I had all my old comics - I'd be a rich man right now. :(

Pappy, did you know about the Nicholas Cage copy - almost perfect condition - that sold at a 2011 auction for $2.1 million?

Yeah, I don't blame you for wanting a copy. ;)
