Common Sense

Today we mourn the passing of a beloved old friend, Common Sense, who has been with us for many years.

No one knows for sure how old he was, since his birth records were lost long ago in bureaucratic red tape.

He will be remembered as having cultivated such valuable lessons as: Knowing when to come in out of the rain; why the early bird gets the worm; Life isn't always fair; and maybe it was my fault.

Common Sense lived by simple, sound financial policies (don't spend more than you can earn) and reliable strategies (adults, not children, are in charge).

His health began to deteriorate rapidly when well-intentioned but overbearing regulations were set in place.

Reports of a 6-year-old boy charged with sexual harassment for kissing a classmate; teens suspended from school for using mouthwash after lunch; and a teacher fired for reprimanding an unruly student, only worsened his condition.

Common Sense lost ground when parents attacked teachers for doing the job that they themselves had failed to do in disciplining their unruly children.

It declined even further when schools were required to get parental consent to administer sun lotion or an Aspirin to a student; but could not inform parents when a student became pregnant and wanted to have an abortion.

Common Sense lost the will to live as the churches became businesses; and criminals received better treatment than their victims.

Common Sense took a beating when you couldn't defend yourself from a burglar in your own home and the burglar could sue you for assault.

Common Sense finally gave up the will to live, after a woman failed to realize that a steaming cup of coffee was hot. She spilled a little in her lap, and was promptly awarded a huge settlement.

Common Sense was preceded in death by his parents, Truth and Trust; his wife, Discretion; his daughter, Responsibility; and his son, Reason.

He is survived by his four stepbrothers; I Know My Rights, I Want It Now, Someone Else Is To Blame, and I'm A Victim.

Not many attended his funeral because so few realized he was gone.

Great post!

Apparently Common Sense is still alive. I went to visit my 89 year-old mother in assisted living with my cousin and asked her to put on her mask. She said "I don't wear a mask because I have CS". When I asked her what she meant she said it was Common Sense.

Okay, you're right. Common Sense deserves a eulogy.

The post makes for interesting reading to say the least.Bring back commonsense or is it not PC enough. How crazy some things have become.

I always say that common sense is something that is not common today. I think it has been replaced by "political correctness" and media fear. Common sense is out and stupid is in. Too bad! In the city where I live we have a "Museum of Human Rights". Apparently, it is very popular with tourists. I have never gone there because I'm a big believer in human responsibility. Everyone is screaming about their rights but no one is talking about their responsibilities. I think adults should be responsible for what they do and not blame other people, like the government or their neighbours for their problems. Guess maybe that is why I have never been to this museum. Maybe I expect too much!

I am amazed this McDonald's lawsuit gets hauled out as the whole world going to hell- and not aware of the facts. The coffee was near the boiling point of water. If you drank it right away, you would have received severe burns to your mouth, and throat. Some spilled on her lap, which caused 3rd degrees burns to her thighs, and abdomen. It was extremely painful, and the medical treatment was long, and costly, which is only what she sued for. The jury awarded her a sum, because they felt McDonald's acted inappropriately by knowingly dispensing such super hot coffee as to be injurious to humans.

Nah, I don't think the world is going to hell, and that common sense is dead. It's that the world is becoming more complex, and there aren't simple solutions-there never were any.

Yeah, I remember this case. It's as you said, and that particular McDonald's had already been in legal trouble for their coffee being hotter than legally allowed. But, this supposedly foolish case gets hauled out all the time, sigh.

The important details in that case are often omitted.
The cups that were previously used for their coffee would become weak from contact with hot coffee & when handling the cup, the sides would sometimes collapse. I'm sure they don't use the same cups now.

BTW, to clarify. The coffee served at this particular McDonalds was not your usual. hot coffee. The management thought having hotter coffee would improve sales. So, they disabled the protective thermostats in the coffee urns, and jerry-rigged the urns to dispense coffee at scalding hot temperatures, close to boiling water. People were getting routinely burned, and there were several suits, similar to this woman's.

An old passage quoted I believe, though almost all I'd totally agree with, (certainly all comments relating to parents/children!).

Really?

I remember a politician saying that we needed to invade a foreign country because it was about to attack us. No proof was ever given but much of the country fell for his lies. In fact a certain memo was published in a British newspaper which set the war was all a set up, a complete sham. Strangely, that pol also said we need to get involved in nation building overseas - this while our own infrastructure was falling apart. Taxpayers eagerly forked over several trillion dollars for his efforts but we lost both wars that he demanded. Meanwhile, his wealthy pals in the military industrial complex profited quite handsomely. Australian leader John Howard also supported him. He, like all else, who jump to conclusions based on lies rather than to inquire rationally are, to me, lacking in common sense. One million dead, trillions lost, domestic problems all disregarded and remaining unsolved due to this type of nonsense.

Crying about trivialities while disregarding relevant and highly critical matters may be the fashion but it will never be actual common sense.

To understand the media war of political correctness versus common sense, one might first read this research that was well received by we in the center majority while the exposed manipulative media and their tribes at both ends of the spectrum hated it.

Personally of the 7 tribes, I'm under Politically Disengaged or Moderates.

Some research on the thread topic:

Quote:
"What is it about society today that makes thinking and acting like a complete idiot and okay thing to do? Where have our personal morals gone? Why does no one believe in karma anymore? Why is doing the right thing so difficult for so many? When will we, as a society, learn that the most valuable asset we have to offer this world and those around us is the ability of the human brain to use common sense? Seriously, what happened to common freaking sense?

In a world that has been designed, to be intricately fair and judicial – especially advanced and brilliant – we are lacking in one of the most basic of abilities of the human brain. To think and act clearly, and with common sense.

As parents, we spend most of our time trying to teach our children how to use common sense. Don’t climb on the bookcase, because it might fall over and hurt you. Don’t hit your sister because it is not nice and you will get in trouble. If you take the lid off your sippy cup, it will spill on the floor. If you stab yourself with a fork in the eye during dinner, it will hurt you. If you speak when the teacher is talking, you will get in trouble.

The list of things we teach children to do and value in life is virtually endless. And the most important parental lesson is to instill common sense in our children. For what? Because apparently from the headlines of late and the general actions of society as a whole – by the time so many people reach adulthood, they have literally no common sense left. Suddenly life is about living in the moment and not thinking about consequences or personal responsibilities that we may have to others and ourselves. Life is lived precariously from one moment to the other."

The lack of common sense boils down to two things. Selfishness and ego. People today place so much stock in being right all the time, in winning – even when there is nothing to win or lose, that they have lost touched with the most basic of human functions. Common sense.

Before long, the lack of common sense and the placement of burden on every one and everything else in this world to accommodate it, will cause people to discontinue thinking at all. At least for themselves. Then what?

Maybe instead of college exit exams and papers, in lieu of graduation exams and standardized testing – success should be measured in one’s ability to function self sufficiently in a world that is much simpler than we could every believe. Imaginably, each of us would be ever curious about those who could pass the common sense test of life – and who would not."

My comments:
Ironically I think it is the "over teaching", (by that I mean so many folks seem to assume that it is their job to "advise", "lecture", essentially patronise everyone else to the nth degree!).

Then when you've been assaulted with all this unrequested advice you're not even sure you know what day it is, let alone what you believed was the most sensible thing to do!
