Community Garden at the Child Care Centre

Last year I applied for a small grant from one of the local licensed clubs to build a community garden at the rear of our church. It is meant to be an intergenerational garden for the children of the child care centre and also for the residents of the aged care units built at the rear of our church.

A small piece of land was going to waste so we had it fenced, with a gate leading from the CCC and established some veggie gardens.

Last Friday we held an brief official opening complete with a red ribbon to be cut. The kids really enjoyed it and pulled up some carrots and radishes. We also harvested one beautiful fresh broccoli and gave it to one of the aged residents.

I've been associated with the management committee of this CCC for 15 years and it has been a source of much joy and personal satisfaction for me. I feel rather proud that I initiated this particular project. In a world that seems to be growing crazier by the day it is good to take time out to grow some veggies to allow the kids to learn about where their food comes from.
