Condo People Want Me to Pay a Non Sufficient Funds Surcharge

Perfect segway into what happened here today. I heard some loud talking outside my door and opened it to see. The guy who lives above me was in a tizzy as he had overdrawn his checking account by a couple hundred dollars and then the bank closed his account. His Social Secerity check came 1 day later and the bank sent it back. Now he has no bank account, no money and a hungry cat. I know this guy for years and he has helped me lift things and so on over that time.

So I brought him into my place, calmed him down and he was able to make a plan re opening a new account at another bank this Monday. He had zero money so I gave him a check for $100 for cat food and people food and whatever else he needs. I told him he does not need to 'pay me back'.

He has no family.

He will be ok in about 10 days when he gets his Social Security. For now he has money for immediate needs. I understand about businesses not holding client's hands, but I will never understand how the employees sleep at night.

Please don't lecture me about being scammed, or anything like that. I know who he is and I know who I am and we'll it at that.

As for Friday the 13th, I got my deliervies on time, had another visit with a friend, and had a great meditation!

The Condo Corp asked us to give them 12 post-dated cheques for the year.

They cashed my February 1 cheque in mid-January. I have plenty of dough to cover the cheque on the first of each month. They made the error, so I am not paying the NFS charge. I went to the Bank as well and they told me they were not charging me the standard $45.00 NSF fee because I did nothing wrong.

Anyhoo...the Condo Corps still hasn't cashed the updated cheque I sent them...so nothing new to tell which is why I haven't returned to this thread to post any new information.

When something happens on their end, I'll update this thread. Thanks for all of the interesting feedback.

Then this is a horse of a different color. In that case, I'd refuse to pay their bank charges. If they insist, I'd tell them to return all uncashed checks they're holding for you.

How does he sleep at night? He stole $200 from the bank.

Why do people keep confusing banks with charities. You wouldn't expect to take $200 worth of clothes from a store and have them keep your account open. The guy can cash his check at Walmart.

Cough up the 25 bucks and get on with life. If you own the condo and are happy living there it's not worth the fight and unpleasantness that might follow. Just my opinion !
I tend to agree. It’s a lot of friction over a mere $25. Is it really worth it? If you are happy living there then maybe just bite the bullet so to speak. Pay the $25 and let it all go.

I have never heard of such a practice and I certainly would never endorse a dozen checks for a business to have at their disposal.
How else do you propose I pay my Condo fees for the year? Give all of the money up front on January 1st?? No thanks. And there is no friction to speak of yet, as I have not heard back from the Condo Board since I told them I wasn't paying the NSF charge.
