Confused and black

I reside in the Midwest. I have noticed in the past few years that many businesses have hired people who speak another language (bilinguals) I have been searching for a job and now the preference is to hire a bilingual person. I am black. Is it wrong for me to feel that the rights my ancestors and our veterans are and have fought for are being forsaken? Some veterans are upset also. They are coming home after serving their country and finding out that because they are not bilingual they can't get jobs in some businesses. Does this mean that more non-Americans are spending money and prospering the country than Americans are? Why is catering to their business and needs more important than ours?

I am confused not prejudice!

I'm a little confused. What does being black have to do with businesses hiring people who are bilingual? Our "melting pot" is filling with spanish speaking individuals who don't speak english and yet businesses need to communicate with them so that has become necessary to adjust to. There is a law that says businesses cannot refuse to hire someone based on their color so if you are seeing that, report it.

Back some time ago we had folks from many nations arriving. I think we still do. My grandparents spoke German at home in Europe but when they came to the US they quickly learned enough English to get along. No reason why the Spanish speaking folks can not do the same rather than expect the US folks to learn Spanish over English.

I do know what you are saying but it is just not right to expect a entire country to change their ways for those that choose to come here to live. Maybe by that logic we should be learning Chinese also. Or maybe the Navajo language.

I may be off base here and I hope the OP corrects me if I am wrong, but I believe she is saying she feels doubly discriminated against. One for being Black and one for not being bilingual.

I don't see race discrimination in hiring anymore (without arrests), quite the contrary. By law, businesses have to hire a certain percentage of blacks but there is no law that says there must be a percentage of whites hired. Some whites lose out to blacks for that reason.

College acceptance has that same problem. Sometimes a more qualified white student may lose out to a black student because the quota must be met or an investigation begins. I'm not saying that's bad but I'm saying it happens and it's too bad for the more qualified one who loses out.

Lara -

What law are you referring to?

I'm not aware of any law mandating that businesses hire a certain percentage of blacks, or that colleges admit a certain number of blacks.

(Yes, I know about reverse discrimination, and I followed the Alan Bakke case in 1978 very closely.)

But, back to my question....what law are you referring to, Lara, that mandates hiring and admitting a certain number of blacks.

Secondly, there is a whole lotta discrimination going on everyday (against various races, including whites) in workplaces and elsewhere for which people aren't getting arrested. People who discriminate aren't arrested - they get sued/charged with violating discrimination laws. But that would be another discussion. For now, I'd like to see citations about the laws you referred to. If such laws exist, I'd be shocked because I think I'd be aware of them

Affirmative Action was not just created for blacks - it's based on race (minorities...not just blacks) and gender. The group who has benefited most from Affirmative Actiin is white women.

But I'll wait for Lara to respond and let me know if she's referring to some other law.

I know that AC... but some people think it was only for Blacks.. particularly for college admissions.
I know it's other races as well but I was staying on topic regarding the OP's comment and title replying to hahalu and therefore to her comment of "black". Is there a problem with that?

I wasn't referring to you Lara... I was answering AC..... is there a problem?

Okay, well I think everything is cleared up, Lara. Thanks.

Moving on...

Anyway, halalu, if what you are saying is you feel frustrated because you are black, not bilingual, and therefore it's hard to find a job I understand your frustration. I don't know what type of jobs you're applying for but I hope you find something soon.

It is easier to comment or give advice if you would tell us what sort of jobs you are seeking
and basically where you live around.

If you live in a Mexican or Spanish area then definitely employers will expect you
to be bilingual. It is difficult to say whether being black is a plus or minus from
what you wrote.
