When meeting new people, what subjects do you like to discuss to get the conversation going? And what subjects do you avoid?

Of course there's always that old standby the weather, but I like discussing books when possible - old skool right? And I try to avoid politics at all costs because many people take it so seriously it can create hard feelings before you even get to know someone.

How about you?

Well I rarely start a conversation with a new person about politics , as for religion..uh uh, nope...

The weather is always a stalwart in the Uk given that we can often have 4 seasons in one day...but that would be just passing conversation...

I rarely discuss books altho' I'm an avid reader...but I do find it a bore to listen someone else's perspective on a book, it usually differs greatly from mine..

I usually with someone new just pass comments on current events..(serious politics aside)...

Sorry, Chic. I thought you were driving a sulky in that profile pic, but I guess its an exercise machine. Reason for editing: Stupidity

The one thing I would never say is, "How are you??"

I once met a woman who spent the next two hours telling us, right down to a blow by blow account, including how many stitches she needed, for each of her three pregnancies!

Ken, "what's up" is fine to both genders. Ralphie was saying that an opening conversation with a man would be different than a conversation with a woman. I was asking, what would be different other than compliments like "nice tie" versus "nice earrings".

That reminds me, a cop came up to my window the other day at a road block while they were checking people's licenses. I was all worried about what was going on and why they were stopping everyone but the first thing he says to me is "Wow, your earrings match your dress, very pretty". I'm thinking, Huh? That's why you stopped me? lol

I never see anyone to have a conversation with except cyber humanoids. Well, yes, sometime my wife says to me, "I told you to eat your broccoli, its good for you.

You can start a conversation about just about anything -- usually I will comment on the venue I am at, if it's an event or a party, maybe asking about how they know the hosts, what they think of the event, etc., or maybe comment on an interesting piece of jewelry someone is wearing, the food, etc.

I am a kept man and micro managed so that I cause no trouble or get into anything. It's all the gospel according to St What's his name.

You must've really dazzled him Lara. Guys don't usually even notice a woman's coordinating ability let alone discuss it.:D Bravo girl.
