I am often asked by friends if I should clear all my cookies, and what are they. Cookies are text files with small pieces of data — like a username and password — that are used to identify your computer as you use a computer network. Specific cookies known as HTTP cookies are used to identify specific users and improve your web browsing experience.
Cookies are useful for websites because it helps load items faster (like images) after you already visited that site. It is important to be able to manage cookies since websites use them to market to you. Remember though if you clear all cookies on the sites that autoload like this one, you will have to log in manually using a username and password.

Thank you kburra, I was wondering about them last week,
do companies that put them on my machine, get a signal,
when I am online, or is it only if I re-visit their site, that they
know about it?

Mike.

Cookies are what Americans call biscuits.
I can recommend the ginger type, dipped
in hot coffee, wonderful.
Thanks for sending the post off track!

I've always thought that if we accepted cookies, that 'they ' always followed us around on the computer. And, I wondered if that was a good or bad thing??

How do we clear cookies?

Thx.

I would always clear both history and cookies if doing any online banking or buying. Also be careful to disallow third-party cookies. These are basic things you should learn about before doing much internet surfing.

Some sites can set a cookie their side (server side?) which would not even show up on your computer.

And then there are (or used to be) Flash cookies that were hard to get rid of. And 'zombie' cookies, sometimes used to permanently ban a user.

Scary world out there, right? ;)

I often wonder why when a sensible and interesting discussion is posted, someone will answer with a silly reply, such as the one above, is it supposed to be funny perhaps someone can enlighten me? personally, I think it is rude and childish to send the original post off-track!!

Here is an a good article all about IT cookies. Some excerpts...

Cookies are used for many different purposes, including (but not limited to):

  • saving user login information to remember them on subsequent visits ;
  • identifying the user and what they are doing;
  • remembering user preferences, such as language, theme mode, font size, etc;
  • understanding how users interact with a website;
  • improving user experience, for example by storing information about your cart so the users don’t have to enter it on every page they visit;
  • helping to gather statistics about visitors, such as their location or device; and
  • helping to gather analytical data, such as pageviews, session durations, and bounce rates.

What is cookie law and how to comply with it?

The cookie law is part of the EU privacy legislation that regulates how cookies are used on a website. It requires websites to get prior cookie consent from users to store cookies on their devices and share details about cookies and their purpose to the users.

To comply with the cookie law, a website must:

  • Use a cookie banner to inform users about cookies and their purpose.
  • Get consent from users to store non-essential cookies.
  • Allow users to deny consent and withdraw consent to use cookies.
  • Document cookie consent for proof of compliance.
  • Update privacy policy or cookie policy to disclose information about cookies, their purpose, and how to control them.

Right or wrong back in the late 80's or early 90's when I first got one of these things I was told to manually delete cookies and browsing history before turning it off......still do and more than likely I won't quit.
