Our State , Missouri, is also having a very sharp increase in cases and deaths. It feels like the whole nightmare is slowly encroaching in a big way...AGAIN!

The Netherlands reported more than 10,000 new coronavirus cases on Saturday, an eightfold increase when compared to last week after most restrictions were lifted despite the rise of the fast-spreading Delta variant.

The National Institute for Public Health (RIVM) said 10,345 new cases were reported on Saturday, the biggest one-day increase since December 25. This compares to 1,146 new cases on the same day last week.

“The coronavirus infection rate in the Netherlands has increased much faster than expected since society reopened almost completely on 26 June,” the government said in a statement on Friday. “Most infections have occurred in nightlife settings and parties with high numbers of people.”

Even though the current surge is not posing a threat to vulnerable groups or the capacity of the healthcare system, such high numbers create a risk for people who are not (fully) vaccinated and raises the possibility of new variants, the government said. Some may also suffer from long COVID.

Prime Minister Mark Rutte announced new measures on Friday in an attempt to stop the “unprecedented” surge in new cases. These measures focus mainly on nightclubs, music festivals, and restaurants because most of the spread is occurring among young adults.

Friday’s announcement followed an urgent advice from the Outbreak Management Team, which expects that pressure on the healthcare system will soon increase, even though it is currently declining. On Friday, only 12 people were admitted to hospital.

“If the increase among teenagers and people in their early twenties continues, it will increasingly spread among the unvaccinated population and the vulnerable, and this group amounts to more than 3 million people,” the team said in its advice. “The pressure on the healthcare system will increase substantially in parallel.”

Virologist Marion Koopmans, who is part of the Outbreak Management Team, said tougher restrictions cannot be ruled out if cases continue to rise in the coming days. “We are closely watching what happens next week,” she told local media.

More than 1.7 million people in the Netherlands have been infected with COVID-19 since the pandemic began, including 17,765 people who died, according to NewsNodes. Nearly 6.5 million people, or 37.1% of the population, is fully vaccinated against COVID-19.

This virus is FAR from being brought under control. Governments are recommending "re-openings", and reducing mask mandates, etc., primarily in an attempt to bring their businesses and economies back to normal. However, so long as people decide to downplay the severity of this virus, and gather in large groups of "unvaccinated", these "spikes" will continue to occur.

I think we will have to live with this situation, and these "cycles", for the foreseeable future.

Only 39% of Missourians have been fully vaccinated, which might be part of the problem. Coincidentally, it's also 39% for the Netherlands.
Yes, there seems to be quite a bit of "vaccine reluctance" in our State, and that is starting to show. The bulk of the cases are appearing in the SW part of the State....where there are large numbers of tourist attractions, and in/around the Lake of the Ozarks...which is another prime area for gatherings of those vacationing and partying. The bulk of those being infected are younger people...who probably think they are "bullet proof".

Then, too, our Government has removed all mask and gathering mandates, in recent weeks, and that is giving a lot of people a false sense of security. With Summer just getting started, I expect many areas will experience numbers approaching "pre-vaccine" numbers.

I keep hearing and reading that the covid variant is running rampant. Fortunately, nobody around here is masking up, there's no panic, the hospitals aren't full and people aren't dying in droves. The reason: For most people, catching it is like being somewhere between nothing and having a cold, with the added bonus of develop antibodies for protection going forward.

It is important to remember that a good many people who supposedly died of covid-19 really didn't die from it but were counted as so. It is whatever underlying health issues you might that you should take care of as just about any virus might be problematic.

JonDouglas, try telling that to the grieving families of the millions who died of it. That is so obviously ridiculous that even many of the original doubters finally came to their senses and got vaccinated.

But go ahead and keep repeating whatever lies you have been programmed to repeat. It's a free country, and you have the right to utter any nonsense you want. Hopefully, you aren't influencing anyone to needlessly die in the process.

When I need a good laugh about something ridiculous, all I need to do is read one of your postings. 🤣

Right now, medical scientists, virologists, and doctors are focusing on the mechanism and treatment of Long Covid and the cardiac problems in young people and children caused by the vaccine. They are saying that, aside from being more contagious and possibly causing Long Covid, the variant viruses themselves are weakening, symptoms are mild and not life-threatening.

People refusing to get vaccinated claim that it's their right, and that's fine until they get sick and their treatment costs 10s of thousands of dollars. The rest of us wind up paying their medical bills, either through taxes that pay for covid treatment or through increased insurance rates. The insurance companies aren't going to eat those costs, nor are the hospitals. Responsible people always wind up footing the bills for irresponsible people. I don't mind sharing the cost if everyone pitches in and does their part, but that's not what's happening.

EDIT: I just did a search and the average cost of covid-19 hospitalization is $73,000, or a total of 9.6 and 16.9 billion dollars for the entire country.

Correct. Something I've never seen on the news, or anywhere else, is Just What is this Virus Costing Us...in terms of dollars. There have been millions of "Free" vaccinations...but Who is paying these drug companies?? I'm sure they are not doing this for free. Who is paying for these hospital expenses...especially since many of the infected may have little, or no, insurance?

While we have been going through some strange times...masking, distancing, etc., etc., the financial impact of this pandemic is going to create some serious Financial Impacts, in coming months and years. Things like Medicare and Medicaid will face some serious problems, and Private or Supplemental insurance rates are bound to rise....substantially.

The hundreds of thousands who have died, and those who have survived, but may have lingering symptoms, are just the first chapter of this saga...the next chapter is going to be the financial impact of trying to pay for it....and the longer it lingers, the more billions it will cost.
