Could dreams be real contact with people?

Before my last dog died, she came to me in my dreams to let me know that she really loved me and wanted to make sure I was going to be ok. After she passed I still had dreams about her. Most of the dreams were lucid- meaning I knew I was dreaming. I feel her around me often. She’s like a spiritual guide. She was 15 when I lost her.
 
I've thought about this and had been meaning to respond way before now. I think it's possible that some dreams are actual connections. Before my second husband and I got together, I was somewhat obsessing about him. I couldn't sleep one night and focused on him, looking at a picture I had of him from our community calendar. That was around 3 a.m. Next day I saw him outside his store. He saw me and flagged me over. I pulled into the parking lot behind his store. Shortly after we started talking, he told me he had a dream that woke him up about 3 a.m.! He dreamed that I was his wife!
 

I dream every night...every night. It's like I go into a different world every time I sleep. I saw my close family members in my dream: grandma, parents, sister, aunt, uncle...I even had brief conversations with them in my dreams. They usually show up when I felt very sad and thought of them during the day. I can't comprehend why or how the dream happened, or if the dreams mean anything.
 
I remember vague images from my dreams that I cannot put into words. They almost always include a few people, most of whom are unrecognizable, but (very) occasionally some are individuals from my past.
