Could you live in the Alaskan wilderness all by yourself?

Maybe visit, but not live there. Too much work. I'd rather live where I don't have to shovel snow or cut grass. I have to do that already. Have the heat turn itself on. I don't have that. Where a decent store isn't 10 miles away too. Used to have a supermarket a few minutes away. It closed down.

If we were still in our 30's, I might think about spending some serious time in a place like Alaska, but not at our ages. We "compromised" when I retired, and moved to a deep forest in the country. We have the essentials within a short driving distance, and the peace and quiet of a very rural area. Keeping a big yard mowed, and a nice garden growing gives us plenty of outdoor exercise to stay fit and healthy. With hundreds, maybe thousands, of trees, I have an endless supply of firewood to feed a big outdoor wood furnace, and keep our Winter heating bills low. That takes some serious physical work to cut, haul, and split 6 or 8 cords of wood every year.....again, a real good way to stay fit. We had decades of city life, and still enjoy a short trip to the city to visit the casino's, stores, and our one remaining daughter/son-in-law who still live there, every few weeks, but it is sure nice to get back to clean air, no noise, no crime, etc.

Having been to Alaska, I am in awe of the beauty of the state but I would not be able to live in the wilderness by myself. I lack the ability and knowledge to be that self-sufficient. Five years ago, I traded big-city life with all of its traffic, air pollution, noise pollution, crime, high taxes and over population for a much, much smaller town that has none of the things I just mentioned. That might be wilderness to some but to me, it's peaceful.

There's a world of difference between "could you" and "would you want to". There's most likely a lot of things that people "could" do, if it was important to them, but there's a lot more that wouldn't do it because they had no interest. That can apply to a lot of things in life.

No truer words typed

Back at'cha !
OK, aside from the 'you started it' ...'same to you' banter, before I leave this alone, I'd like to know you are of a better understanding of the ability to be on the web while being off the grid.....you got this, right?
(it's not a new misunderstanding...been questioned many times on many forums, so yer not the lone stranger on this)

Gary, my first reply in all of this was teasing you about living in the 'wilderness' and being on line [one of our more modern forms of communication], I even threw in an LOL, so that you, and all would know that I was just jerk'in your chain. But your first response following that was to note my ignorance [as you apparently see it] , then you added later

"You don't have what it takes
If you have any intellect at all, you'll let this go"

You do not know me...you do not know what I may , or may not have.

Yes I am aware of the many ways of being 'remote' and still 'in touch'

So, I can let this go right here if you can? If however you cannot ? I can do this for years ...... Ball's in your court.

Well, I definitely missed the tease
Thought the 'LOL' was more of a laugh at 'how can you'
Been thru it too many times, too many forums

Consider it let go

Why would anyone commit to do anything if they didn't have even a rudimentary knowledge of what it may entail?

Great question

But it happened most every summer in our neck-o-the-woods

They generally last the summer

Those that set up camp in late summer get themselves in a real bind in two to three months
Tough to get around in 4-6 feet of snow....let alone the cold

Oh, it's all pretty

cold.jpg

Pretty freaking hard

...and pretty damn cold

It was -37°F when I took this pic

I can imagine. Having enough wood to keep reasonably warm during the day and to thaw your water in the morning, making sure you have enough to eat until you get dug out and wearing long underwear until April. Those are a few of the things I remember from living out in the sticks.
