Could You --Would You Work As A Hangman?

If Hanging was the legal & prescribed DEATH PENALTY for those legally convicted and sentenced in your area would accept the job as HANGMAN IF IT PAID EXCEPTIONALLY WELL?

Nope, not my kind of gig. Not an enthusiastic supporter of the death penalty, though there are some crimes for which it is appropriate. The Boston Marathon bomber comes to mind.

If it paid exceptionally well and had benefits...and I didn't have to observe too close...yup The Boston Bomber would get strung up first.

Maybe not a hangman, but if the perp had committed an especially heinous crime I'd have no problem

pushing the button, switch, lever, plunging the hypo needle etc. on "Old Sparky", the gas chamber, or the execution bed.

(On a relative other thought, I 'm probably guilty myself of murder as an ex bomber pilot flying the plane that
dumped bombs on the targets, some of which were towns or enemy troop concentrations; and I'm not the only one.
Same difference and many were killed, but many lives were also saved after it was all over.

Nobody ever came after me for my military experience.)

I would not, and if in some extreme situation I had to execute someone, and I mean in some very extreme situation, then I would do what had to be done but never for money.

Your bombing in no way could ever be considered murder Falcon.

No, I think even if it paid well, I couldn't get enough hours in. :p I'm for the death penalty for certain criminals, but I wouldn't be happy working in that field.

Two years ago, my wife and I watched a series called The Killing, which is now available on Netflix. In season 3, the actor Peter Sarsgaard plays a man who may or may not be guilty of the murder of his ex-wife and now on death row. He opts to be executed by hanging (which at the time was still legal in the state of WA) and the final scene is horrifying. While I highly recommend the series, that was hard to watch.

No no a thousand times no! Don't believe in death penalty.

But, is hangman really the correct term in this day age. People are not called postmen anymore, they are mail carriers here as women do this job too. Shouldn't the correct term be something like hangperson, or if this job is not open to women, wouldn't that be discrimination?

Lol, yes Cookie I think the term hangperson or hangwoman would be much more politically correct. :D I was a Teamster Union Steward for many years, elected to the position twice by my fellow coworkers...yes, fellow coworkers. Would I have rather been called the Union Stewardess?......nooo! ;) If my job was hanging people, I'd have no objection to the description hangman, not threatened by this at all.

Just being facetious - not serious at all - but I wonder what the hiring process would be or if it is assigned by way of promotion or what, and what would the applicants be like? Creepy!

I agree it's creepy for me anyway, would rather flip a switch than put a noose around someone's neck. If I was on death row and had a choice, it would be lethal injection...preferably something that would send me on my way with a smile on my face.

Bobw and others I agree hanging is one of the most crappy ways to die...but hey for the Boston guy it's too lenient. But apparently they can screw up lethal injections too. Probably the easiest way to go is a good marksman...shooting something vital is pretty quick from what I understand.

But for those who don't believe in the death penalty. For really heinous crimes where the victim was tortured or were known to have suffered before death. Why are we concerned about the comfort of the perp? If they are guilty beyond any reasonable doubt and gladly admit to the crime...hey Sharia law is right, let them hurt too.

I imagine the correct term is just "executioner."
