On another site several people put up threads about David Bowie's passing. A remarkable life there. Having a new album AND a new play released within weeks of your death. He knew he was going and left two more works behind in the process wow, what an icon. But the topic turned to us late boomers. For you who are far older you've been through this already.
But us late boomers were sex and drugs and rock n' roll. WE weren't going to get old heck no, live fast die young and leave a pretty corpse. So here we are anyway. There were those who kicked it predictably young. I admired guitarist Tommy Bolin. So much talent if you listen to his stuff now. But those around him knew it wasn't if but when he was going to go.
Enjoying heroin a bit too much and a shifty manager n' he became a mere footnote to the bands he played in. I remember reading the blurb in Circus magazine " Tommy Bolin Dead at 25". I was thirteen so he was kind of old. Then I remember where we were when they announced Belushi's death. There was somebody in the backseat smoking what have you and as he exhaled he croaked " Hey that's messed up".
John Lennon was ahead of my time but even him. Basically assassinated and he wasn't forty I don't think. But now our music idols, our generation are starting to go. Not drugs or violence but just older and natural disease. And it makes me feel old and sad. Levon Helm, I've named several cats and dogs after members of The Band...their music...Levon a trooper to the end.
With Lou Reed and Bowie the two things that stand out...the album covers that were my teen years...

He was great in that role as well as most every roll he appeared in, he was a very fine actor.
