dead deer in the yard

Lots of shooting all around this weekend. Early afternoon after the dew dried we started to mow and pick up leaves. Brooke had just got started when she found a dead deer in the yard. I sure didn't feel up to butchering it so I called the sheriffs office. Someone came out later and picked up the deer. I'm glad the meat wasn't wasted

I wished that you would have called me. With my osteoarthritis, I can't drag deer anymore, so I have to depend on my friends to share their meat. This will be the first year that I have not hunted in a long time, but I will still go up to the hunting camp with the guys. I can still do the cooking while they are out in the woods. I own one-fifth of the camp and will probably sell my share at the end of this season. My wife asked me what I was going to do with my rifles and I told her that I would probably be selling them. My son has all he needs and I only have the two. I will keep my pistols here in the house, but I no linger have any need for my rifles. I have friends that have 80 or more guns and rifles. I never did understand that.

Here in PA, it is illegal to sell venison commercially. However, the man that did my butchering, still will sell a little meat to people he knows. What happens is that when you take your deer to him, you may not get the meat from the deer that you shot. Here in PA we have mountain deer and valley deer and both have different diets. The valley deer eat corn and beans all summer and produce much better meat than mountain deer that eat plants, berries, leaves and stuff like that and the meat is not all that good. I love venison and here in PA we are also trying to increase the Elk population. The state does allow some hunting of Elk, but I believe they only allow 2000 licenses and you have to put your name in the drawing to buy a license.

I like venison too, but haven't hunted in several years. I wanted to give the deer to my neighbor but no one was home. I guess the sheriffs dept. keeps a list of people who will take them. I have a permanent license but I need to get some tags so if I find another I can take it to the processors.

I have a lot of guns I need to sell but I'll still keep most of them.

How many deer can you take in Arkansas? I came across a dead deer two weeks ago, but it had already bulged and I passed on it. If I have a chance to take one from a fresh roadkill, so long as it isn't mutilated by an 18-wheeler, I will have it ground into burger and some bologna. I enjoy a good neck roast, loins and steaks from the hind quarters and just a little jerky. My son's FIL went out west and brought back some Elk meat. That is some might fine eating.

When we hit the deer with our car last month, the cop told us they had a phone list and would begin calling people to come get the deer to butcher.. I was happy too... At least someone had some meat from our disaster.. I just think they should have sent us som venison sausage... doncha think?

I haven't checked the rules lately. The last I remember you could take four deer. I'll try to remember to get a hunting regulation book next time I'm in town. I see lots of deer I could shoot but my wife doesn't want me killing "our" deer. She would prefer I go off to the national forest and shoot "their" deer.

Nearly every year you hear about culling... Deer can devastate their habitat if left to breed like they are.. Normally I'm not a big fan of hunting but I can see it's more humane than letting them starve or die of disease..

Lol ... I understand how your wife feels.
We have large wooden areas around here, and the deer 'sorta feel safe' there because it's too populated for the local hunters to be shooting... they take off to other areas out of the county..

My friend in Idaho was telling me that she had had three moose in her yard on the day that she called me. She lives in a smaller town in North Idaho.
I know that in really bad winters the deer, moose, and elk always come down out of the high mountains because the snow is too deep for them to forage for food.
But this was just last week, and they hadn't even had snow there yet; so I was puzzled why the moose would be in town . She explained that because of the wolves spreading in the area, and having been protected, that now the animals were having to come right into town to avoid the wolves. They have even seen wolves killing and eating deer close to town; so there may soon be no place that is really safe for the deer and elk.
The hunters will not be able to find as many deer and elk when they are hunting for their winter meat, either.
I think that animal preservation is not a bad thing; but when it is obliterating another (unprotected) species, then they need to get rid of some of the predators.
