I'm sure this is a problem everywhere, but it's definitely substantial here in the US.

6.5 million 112 year-olds on Social Security? Seriously?

$1.4 billion paid out in COVID stimulus checks to dead people?

Kennedy Reveals Shocking 'Fraud' That's Seen 'Dead People' Receive Money From The Federal Government

Sure does sound like D.C. has some messes worth cleaning up. I'd hate to see the numbers for military spending cheats.

I’m sure that it happens but I’m skeptical of the numbers.

It has been my experience that the funeral director reports a person’s death to the Social Security death registry as part of their services.
Yeah, those Senators. Always making things up in session. :ROFLMAO:

Er, part of his thesis is that SS refuses to share the death registry with Treasury and others who mail our checks to people.

I have been convinced, for a long time, that 1 out of every 3 dollars the government gets goes down the toilet due to government incompetence and corruption. The ONLY thing that matters to most politicians is keeping their major campaign donors happy.

I remember years ago, around the time I left New York City, I heard of a sting operation where a lot of married women who were working, or had husbands who were working, were arrested for getting welfare checks. One or two weekly paychecks, and they were also getting welfare checks and benefits.

All deaths in Australia require an official death certificate issued by the appropriate state. The federal government that is responsible for benefits such as pensions and taxation is automatically informed of the death. The age pension continues for one more monthly payment then ceases automatically. The deceased name is automatically removed from the electoral rolls as well.

I find it hard to believe that the mighty US has no such system to deal with dead people.

You might be right, and then it's up to the SSA to record the death, but where? A national data base? And how long does it take? Months?

My sister died in August. I still get mail for her from Sacramento County saying her state property taxes are in arrears, and from her credit card companies saying her payments are past due. I sent the first ones back with a note: "This person is deceased." The county asked me to send proof (i did). The CC companies just keep sending monthly bills.

So I think the SSA is at fault here.

That is amazing!

I've read about the SSA continuing to send out checks to dead people before. Another thing to consider is sometimes relatives of the deceased don't let the administration know and they forge those checks (when they were sending out checks). Now certain relatives may have access to the deceased accounts.

It is seldom about forging as most all SS went to direct deposit.
If a relative has access to that account they can use the money. I have seen a few news stories over the years of a relative passing and family kept using the ss income. several things done with the body... in a freezer or even buried in a backyard in these reports.

Social Security scammers invented wild cover stories, posed as dead relatives, feds say

While most funeral directors have a form that is suppose to alert SS that is not a fail safe system and seems to me there are many ways SS could audit better then they do.
As for the 112 yr olds on the rolls that more often is a stolen identity situation some are NOT collecting money but working and paying into system. The SS system has hundreds of thousands of mismatched or just fake # paying into system .... This is not a big mystery.

"It is seldom about forging as most all SS went to direct deposit." Yes if you notice, I did say it was back when people were getting checks.

I understand that i was just more stating it seems to be an unforeseen consequence of direct deposit.
