Dealing with inexplicable pain without panicking

Oh the sudden, often short-lived but frightening pains I get sometimes!
Last evening for about 4 hours I got the most awful jaw pain. So bad I couldn't think about anything else or where to put myself. I thought it was toothache, or neuralgia or was it something truly awful. I took painkillers and tried to distract myself, it was late and I was tired. Eventually it just stopped and I slept, fine now and mighty relieved.

How do you stop yourself panicking and thinking the worst? I even wondered if I was having a stroke last night but it appears not!

I used to get that kind of jaw pain. It was caused when our labrador jumped up, when I was bending down .. and his head hit my jaw. The pain was excruciating, and it put my jaw out of alignment.
I don't get the pain anymore, though my jaw "clicks" on the right side, sometimes.

Have you discussed this with your doctor at any time?

Poor Rose. I was in a restaurant a few years ago, bit into a slice of cucumber and had such terrific jaw pain I couldn't open my moth for more than a quarter inch for the rest of the day. Couldn't eat!!!

My dentist was unimpressed, seemed to see it all the time, said it was inflammation.

Last month I had headaches so bad it felt like hot rebar being poured in through my ear. If I had a gun, I may have shot myself. It was from a lump in my neck being shrunk during radiation therapy. It stuck around for a week and Tylenol was the only thing I would take, since I won't ever take opioids for pain.

For about 3 years I have had to learn how to function with a pain level of 7, sometimes 8, that effects my inner ears and sinuses. I also have burning ankles and mouth. All idiopathic (unknown cause). It's all the time.

When awake my medicines for pain are gabapentin, oxcarbasepine, gummies, and small amounts of pot. Same at night. I can only sleep about 3 hours, then awake to the intense pain and medicate.

What is amazing is that now after all this time I am finding life to much more interesting. Life is precious, pain is just part of it. So now I take the best care I can, then leave the rest up to life to do it's dance. I dance when I can. I do love to watch, and retreat when necessary. :)

Not yet, but I shall if it happens again.

GERD (and/or a hiatal hernia) can cause pain in the jaws, usually coupled with pain in the middle of the chest.

Since it mimics a heart attack, many people who show up at the ER convinced they're heading for the pearly gates are relieved that a good belch and an antacid will see them back onto this mortal coil.
