Australian Defence Minister has been accused of calling an alleged rape victim a “lying cow.”

The shocking allegations will pile on more pressure for her to resign. According to a story in The Australian, Senator Reynolds made the remarks in front of staff members after Ms Higgins went public about an alleged rape inside the ministerial wing of Parliament House in 2019.

She made these comments (lying cow) in front of her own staff who dobbed her in, sounds like they didn't like their boss.

It's a whole can of worms being opened up in Canberra right now. Historic claims of rape have resurfaced as well as current complaints of inappropriate behaviour in parliamentary offices.

In January each year we announce Australian of the Year awards to promote outstanding people who draw attention to various good causes such as mental health or environmental issues. The 2021 Australian of the Year is Grace Tame, a young woman who was groomed and abused by one of her middle aged high school teachers until she finally raised the courage to break free and report him to the police. She has since devoted herself to raising the issue of sexual abuse and grooming, and recovery programs for the abused. Her speech when accepting the award has triggered not only interest but also has caused more women to come forward telling their stories.

Grace Tame spoke at the National Press Club in Canberra this week. Her full speech can be heard here but it was in the Q & A after that she was most eloquent.

Brittany Higgins threatened to sue Defence Minister Linda Reynolds, unless she apologised over allegations that she called her a ‘lying cow’.

"I want to express how deeply sorry I am for these remarks and for any hurt and distress they have caused," Senator Reynolds said in a statement.

It's all so very easy.

Her apology is a lot better than most of the ones I have heard from other politicians. It is direct and to the point unlike the ones that say, "I deeply regret any hurt my words may have caused."

Ever notice how much apologizing goes on these days by politicians and celebrities? They apologize after being outed for their careless, heartless actions and comments. She's probably just sorry that someone made her insensitive, crass comment public.

When my brother divorced his wife, I finally told him what I always said about his 'ex'. I didn't like her, and made my feelings known to other family members. And not one of them ran to the press to rat me out. If Reynolds said whatever to her staff, it was between she and her staff. Surely, we can expect candor, when you are discussing matters with your own staff. There is a difference in saying 'lying cow' in a staff meeting, and uttering it in world wide TV news interview.
I'm always amazed at politicians, through out the world, who supposedly have to deal with dramatic, universal issues; and they get embroiled in petty spats. Everybody goes nuts over the spats, while truly urgent issues get shoved to the back burner.

We have no way of knowing the true character of our politicians, we just hope for the best. But in this case, Senator Linda Reynolds’ moral compass became crystal clear when she betrayed another woman’s plea for help. And her own employees spilled the beans about the ‘lying cow’ incident, clearly a very disloyal act by staff who dislike their boss. There are rumours today that she may not return to her job. I sincerely hope she doesn’t.

Breaking: Linda Reynolds settles Brittany Higgins defamation complaint over ‘lying cow’ comments. Undisclosed damages to be paid personally - not by taxpayers - and will be donated in full to a Canberra organisation that assists sexual assault survivors.
