Dehumidifier actually made the room warmer

I don't have an AC. That's why I tried the DH. We're in for several days of temps in the mid to upper 90sF.
The "heat dome" headed your way is right over us, now. We will have temps in the upper 90's, and heat indexes over 100 for this next week. At the bare minimum, you should get a window AC unit...they aren't that expensive.

Get a small window unit for the bedroom. At least you will get some sleep and if you have a tv in the room you can hole up in there when it is very hot. Try your social services to see if there is someone to assist you on moving and installing this. A portable unit is a very easy install but is more costly.

But yeah, the dehumidifier generates a fair amount of heat.

The expense isn't the problem, it's the maneuverability. I can lift anything over 25 pounds.
There is an Amazing company called Home Depot. Not only will they deliver for example an 8000 btu window A'C but you can have them install it.
Of course that isn't free but between comfort & leaving money unspent my choice is comfort wins every time.

Probably get the same @ Lowes.

I would also look for one of these portable units on wheels that don’t need to be hoisted in and out of the window every year.

We have one of those for the garage. Not to cool the garage just to cool the area where we have the extra refrigerator/freezer. It doesn't really work all that good but good enough to do what we use it for.

My first thought was a portable, but moving from room to room would require reinstalling it the window every time.
With this heat dome headed your way, starting tomorrow, and extending for 3 or 4 days, it's a bit late to consider buying a couple of window AC's. Your Only options would be sitting in front of a good fan....if you have one....or checking your area for a "cooling center" where you can hang out for several hours a day. If you stay in your hot house these next few days, you risk having a heat stroke.

One thing is for sure...it's going to get hotter every year, so if you survive this "dome", you need to plan ahead for what will surely be coming multiple times this Summer, and years to come.

We're already experiencing extreme heat today, and if our AC were to crap out, we would Not try to "ride it out"....we would head for one of the nearby relatives houses...or go to the casino.

In cooling the indoor air, air conditioners remove both heat and moisture from the air. In the picture, it appears that the waste heat is expelled to the outdoors via the flexible hose, but what happens to the condensate? If I were to guess, there's likely a bucket in the bottom of that unit that needs to be frequently removed and emptied. :(

There is a removable pan to collect the condensate in the one we have. Only thing is we live where the humidity typically doesn't get above 10 %.

I'm guessing living in upstate N Y & not having an air conditioned home is normal. Don M had very good suggestions. I think he is right about heat being predicted to rise in the coming years. Since this is the last days of June with the two hottest months still ahead. If it were me I'm capable of picking up & installing a window mount a/c . But for Deb buying & having two delivered & set up would be after these two important things to consider .

1. room size to cool what BTU size will do the job. this web site has a calculator. Knowing before you buy is important.
BTU Calculator: What Size Air Conditioner Do I Need? | P.C. Richard & Son

2. Depending on BTU will 115 be OK as the power supply or will 220 wiring be needed. This info is available to find on the internet.

Naturally the one in the bedroom doesn't need to run during the day & vice a versa for the one where her computer is.

I don't know if it would work for your home, but I have a window unit in the bedroom, with a fan at the doorway facing down the hall. It cools the hallway, dining room and kitchen.
