Delta strain discovered in Australian children

It’s finally happened, we now have children under 9 years of age with the Delta variant. Those countries who have started vaccinating children knew what they were doing. Am hoping that even though they are positive, they won't become ill.

There is growing concern for children in Queensland's south-east as the highly-contagious Delta variant spreads among younger people. School children are particularly at risk, with 10 of yesterday's 13 new cases under the age of nine. The Queensland Children's Hospital is now on standby in case an infected child becomes seriously unwell.

Today, our state Premier said that outdoor dining at pubs and clubs will be allowed, gyms can reopen with strict rules and students will be back in classrooms once a majority of NSW adults are vaccinated under the state government’s plan for how Sydney emerges from lockdown.

People are holding off waiting for the Pfizer but because our PM didn't buy enough, everyone who is rushing to be vaccinated today is getting the AZ. The government will still not give a direct answer to whether they purchased the AstraZeneca because it was cheaper than the Pfizer.

Price certainly came into it but I think the fact that it was associated with Oxford may have also contributed. AZ did not require storage in such low temperatures so distribution should not have been as big a problem as Pfizer. Finally, we could manufacture it in Australia under licence. Seemed like a good idea at the time and realistically, it still is. The down side of AZ as far as I am concerned was the long wait between first and second jabs.

It's a pity that the Queensland Uni virus failed. That would have been very good for Australia.

Is there any information on how severely they're being affected?

The problem seems to be that there are multiple cases in multiple schools, not all of which are in Queensland, and the kids are infecting their own families, who then have to go into at least 2 weeks home quarantine. As each new member tests positive the quarantine clock resets to zero and everyone has to wait out another 2 weeks.

Also we haven't prioritised teachers for vaccination. If they start becoming infected the kids won't be able to come to school.
