Connecticut Governor Cancels $1 Billion of Medical Debt for 250,000 Residents
Connecticut Governor Ned Lamont, a Democrat, announces that the state will purchase $1 billion of residents' medical debt for just $6.5 million, effectively eliminating the debt for 250,000 people. This is the first time a state has forgiven medical debt on such a large scale, and it will be done in partnership with the nonprofit organization RIP Medical Debt. Medical debt is the number one source of debt collection in the US, disproportionately affecting black and Latino families.
