You can overtake the last person if it is a multiple lap race. think nascar. last place gets passed all the time. just saying
 
I know they were trick questions so I was ready. I got every one right except the math one. I was convinced the answer you gave was wrong because I'm good at mental addition. I took my calculator out and added in my head again, checking my answers against the calculator. I had to do it three times to see exactly where I'd gone wrong. And I don't want to say here where I'd gone wrong and why in case someone else wants to do it, but I will say it's tricky!!!!
 
How do you know that when you pass the second place guy in a race that you are not in a tie with the first place guy?

See the assumption here is that as soon as you overtake the second place guy you are in second place but there is no room for progress.

So if you are in a tie with the first place guy, the second place guy is really in third place. So you have really overtaken the third place guy not the second place guy.

Does that make sense? Because if it doesn't I'm not going to explain it again.
